I just got a 95 Evinrude 30HP and want to know a little more about it

From what I can tell, it's a 1995 model. Tiller handle, electric start, no option to rope start, which sucks but whatever. I bought it because I thought it would be easy to convert to a short shaft motor, and it was 250 bucks. The breakdown showed it to be just a spacer, but that doesn't look like the case. In fact, it looks like the whole mid section is one long piece that would take a serious amount of work to replace. Is this the case? If so, can anyone tell me what other models might be interchangeable? I can't find a ton of info on the newer Evinrude 25/30s but I am thinking they have remained largely the same for the better part of 20 years. I am just not sure which models may interchange or share the same platform. Can anybody help me out?

That's a factory long shaft you got there. If it were a short shaft, converting it to a long shaft would be
easy as you described.

So essentially it's too much work to be worth it to convert it? That blows. I guess I'll be using a riser plate. It's not a pretty solution but it should work fine I guess!


Can you tell me what other motors are designed on the same platform? Are the 20/25/30 horsepower motors of similar years the same platform? Or is it designed on a bigger platform, like 30/35/40 hp or something like that? I am curious how much it weighs, it sure seems heavy.

Yep, the 20/25/30 horsepower motors are similar.
According to Nada, it weighs 123#, the same as my 1988 Johnson 30hp.
Its feels heavier than that, but I guess
its because its awkward to lift.

Yea, I would go with the jack plate. $250 is a steal if its a running motor.

On my 96 30hp, there is a small notch on the flywheel (above the teeth) to hook a temporary rope start to if you need it.

The guy I bought it from had it sitting for 2 years but had drained the gas out of it. I started it up this weekend, it runs and pisses water great. I think it could run a little *smoother* but I am pretty stoked about getting a running motor for 250 dollars. It was heavily used in salt and has some oxidation on the aluminum, but other than that looks great. I am thinking I will change the oil in the foot and run some Seafoam through it. It may smooth out and run well after that. I am still searching for a trailer and need to register my new hull, but once I do that I'm going to take her for a spin. It is going to make my Gheenoe Classic haul ballz that's for sure.

Dumb question time.. I have never used a tiller motor before.. how do I shut the motor off? I only see a start button and a kill switch with lanyard.

Is there is a push button at the lanyard clip?
