Hello all

As you guys seen Iv'e been working on my nephews engine and I just Hit a "brack wall" when re-installing the mid-section and exhaust plate.

When I sandwiched everything together I saw that I can see abit of light threw the front tip of the mid-section and the bottom plate area see pic with the red box . That is how far I can see light threw everything else went together flawlessly. It is very small but I can see light and know this is a small section that didn't seal

DSC01191.jpg

It seem that is only blocks the driveshaft area and mabey I can get away with it not sealing totally. Is there water or exhaust in this area that makes this area have to seal up 100%?

Is this fine? Or am I looking at a disassemble and a trip to the machine shop to level it?

This really sux, I just get a break with weather and all the parts are in. Now I get this. I guess I'm the one to blame tho, I should have checked everything better.... bright side is the head isn't on yet so im only looking at a small disassemble but I should do stuff right the first time not this 1 step ahead and 2 back crap.

Thanks,
DamianJP

A little more info would be nice What drive, engine, year etc Pic doesnt tell all. To me [ tho I am blind in one eye and cant see out of the other] Looks like the gap between the upper and lower unit on an Alpha 1. If thats the case, dont sweat it, There is all sorts of water in there. Cant tell 4 sure what that pic is

OK Is it where the lower unit on the outdrive connects with the upper ??? You said you were working on the engine.

Ya could have at least replaced the swivel pin and upper mount bolts... did ya do any grinding or sawing in this area?

Hey Faztbullet

Upper mount bolts were in there good and I could not get them out. I wanted to demo them out to start with new hardware. Nephew did not want to demo them out. So they stayed.

"VERY" light grinding to clean up the areas for the new gasket. Wirebrush attachment on a dremel at light to med speed.Light with barley any pressure because I was affraid to make things un even.

What do you think, does this area need to be %100 sealed? Not under pressure by exhaust or water flow, just the drive shaft area.

Thanks again,

Hey DukeDog

Thanks for the help, has anyone else seen this happen before? Where there was a slight space in the front tip of the lower exhaust plate and then sealed when powerhead studs were torqued down?

Just wanna make sure before I install the head.

I just showed my nephew your post of the rusty steering bracket and bolts. Told him he should replace it and that its $240 for the steering arm and alittle more for the bolts but I cannot get threw to him. For $260 you can have piece of mind and insurance that the WHOLE engine isn't gonna come off and about personal injury but I cannot get threw to him. He's looking at the short term money loss and not planning ahead. Wish I could find a parts engine to rob peter to pay paul and just throw it on.

Yeah, it should seal good enough. Without tha powerhead screwed down there's really nothin' squashin' tha front part of tha downhousing to tha adapter........

I'd keep an eye on ebay for just a mid without tha trim. Just be careful ya don't get something like ya already got................

DukeDog my friend you have just made my rest easier tonight! :D

Yeah I would really like to grab that used Steering arm and bolts while we have her open this far. I saw a bunch of outboards by his local marina the other day mabey some were beyond repair and they are they for parts of just sitting there. Prolly belong to the marina repair shop, im gonna go do some asking around tomorrow. See if I can dig up some used gear.

What the year range im looking for and HP range that would adapt?

Also if you could educate me, is there anything flowing threw the drive shaft chamber area that needed to be sealed N E way?

Again Thanks again to all helped.

Thanks,
DamianJP

Nothin' really....
Any V6 with three ram trim clamp and tiller will work but yours will have tha wide flat tiller arm. Can't remember what year that changed. Maybe '89. On all tha V6 three ram tilt n trim clamps and tiller are tha same size in every respect except for tha earlier ones which have tha skinny arm (where your steering attaches)and tha later ones are wide and flat...............
