I'm looking for some help here. I just picked up a couple of old motors from a garage sale. Both motors went for $30 bucks (seemed like a great deal if they really work like I was told!). My plan is to get a small fishing boat for my 2 little boys to putt around in and then sell the other one if it works.

One is a 3.3 horse Evinrude with a model # of 4371-36820. Does anyone know what the 36820 stands for ? I figured out the 4371 stands for the model year, but I haven't figured which year between 1941 and 1946.

The other motor is a Johnson Sea Horse(probably a 3 HP, possibly late 40's to mid 50's, I'm guessing) but the model/serial # plate is missing. Does anyone know how I can identify this motor without the plate?

Lastly, I was told they both ran a couple of years ago before they went in storage, but haven't been started since. Is there anything I should be aware of and careful with before I attempt starting them? Any info will be greatly appreciated as I have ZERO experience with antique motors.

Thanks in advance,
BMD

4371 tells you it is a 3.3HP built between 41-46. The other number is a seriel number.

On the Johnson, there should be a silver plug on the engine block with the same numbers that were on the ID tag. You might have to look for it under the crud. On the really old ones it was on the top of the flywheel also.

Check the thread 'Awakening a sleeping outboard' in the Top Secret file at the top of the page. Let me know if you can't find it and I will post a link.

Good luck!

Your 3.3 hp was built in 1947. Model 4371 was last produced in 1947. Serial number 36820 is from 1947.

I can't tell what the other motor is. Its either a 2.5 hp HD-25 (1946-50) or a 5 hp TD-20 (1946-49). From the first photo I thought it was a TD, but the second pic looks like it could be a HD so I don't know.

None of them have much value. Seems like there is a lot more TD/TN's around than the old 3.3 hp Sportwins whereas the HD's seem fewer still.
