Re: I kinda felt like a failure......

Sorry, White. This line sounded provocative to me:
"I am waiting on a Warden to come ask me but hasn't happened yet."

If it was not supposed to sound that way, my apologies and no offense intended. There are people out there who like to look for confrontations with the law, which in my opinion is not a wise path to take. I'm glad you're not one of them.

I too spend a lot of time up in the marshes and love my Carolina Skiff; it's a 19 but still slides over the mud like a skimming stone. I can throw a 13' canoe in it and with that combo get about anywhere those ducks and oysters are hiding! And amazing the amount of gear, equipment and building materials it will haul.

Cool boat Home Cookin'. I understand about the comment no offense taken. Do you ever have any problems with your skiff slipping sideways in corners if you accidently take one harder than you meant too? Mine has a tendancy to want to slip sometimes. I am used to it now and I know not to press corners, but it scared me pretty good the first time I rode in it.

I keep many on board. If I need to cool off I bring into the water with me and sit on it. After a bit of practice you can balance on them nicely, bobbing in the water about chest high without a care in the world. Works better than any of the inflatable chairs I've used :D

Don't beat yourself up, just be glad you are now in compliance and threads like this help get the word out. This is from a checkpoint where I boat; they inspected 215 boats on July 2nd:

An estimated 73 percent of the watercrafts that were contacted were in compliance, but the two most common violations were not having a fire extinguisher and not having a portable rescue device (AKA Type IV).

I keep my throw-able on top of my lounge seat at the helm...rear-ender fender for me...always ready to throw as well...why would you not have one...they are not only for your boats occupants....you may witness an accident on the water , and respond and save a life by having it available...just my 2 cents...

In addition to a "throw seat", I carry a "throw rope".
It is actually a rope in a nylon bag that you throw out to somebody.
You throw out the bag on one end, and hold on to the other end.

The rope bag is more instinctive for somebody to hold, and if you miss on the
first throw, pull it in, and throw it out again.

I don't think it qualifies for anything, and it is only an extra.

:)

It's not that I didn't want to have one, but in all my preparedness to be compliant and my hastiness to get on the water, the thought of buying one never ever crossed my mind.

Yep...they make great floats with a little practice. We have 2 just because they work so good to sit on and float around. Keeps your head at the perfect drinking height above water :D

Not sure at what length they're required here in SC, but I've got on stowed away just in case. I know that we've been checked before on a 15 footer and they didn't ask for it. Not sure if it was technically required or not.

SC law requires a throwable for vessels 16' or larger as well, FYI.

That's funny. Kinda like some safety rules I have seen where if you are on a step ladder (6') you have to have a harness on and tied off. No matter the harness has a 6' foot leader! :)
Keeps your inert body from rolling too far away from the ladder.

Re; Do you ever have any problems with your skiff slipping sideways in corners

Yes! Mine is a 1994 or something, first year made, perfectly flat with chines. You slip and then it grabs hard, throwing you and everything to the side. Quite dangerous, really. Happens when it's empty. ALso shoots water along the transom under the rolled gunwale and against the motor; I installed wooden deflectors for that.

It's ugly but it's basically a work boat for our hunting and fishing club.

I would love to see a pic of that

In Nevada the throwable not only has to be accessable but accessable from the helm.

Re: I kinda felt like a failure......

I always keep on board 2 red cushions. Not only are they great to sit on . . .

They are also great as added fenders when docked and the waves are bouncing a small boat like mine against the docks even though I have two fenders out. I can carry two less fenders and the $8 cushions are a lot cheaper than a $150 boat decal if the dock were to scratch it up.

Another thing I learned in a boating course that I never knew was you don't jump in to save someone (hence the need for the throwable device). A drowning person can in a state of panic grab onto you in the water and climb up you as they are gasping for air pushing "you" down under the water.

Worse yet . . . you are alone and you jump in . . . who is minding your drifting away boat

I use mine for the exact same purpose.

I have heard (although haven't confirmed) that in texas they have written tickets if you didn't have your throwable cushion available..meaning if it was stored in a locker that wasn't compliant. I have verify with game warden but i did read that from some one's experience on another forum.

and not having a portable rescue device (AKA Type IV).

after reading about these several times in this thread and I just re-checked the ontario laws, and the Type Iv throwable isn't required unless the vessel is over 19'8" .... we only require a buoyant heaving line.... which is nicely done with some rop and a little floating buoy on the end. They cost like $3.99

The one thing I thought for a second I missed was requiring a ladder or reboarding device, but with the little footnote, stating it is not required here if the freeboard is less than 1'8" (.5M)

I keep the safety stuff under the bow storage... I will have to look into it to see if I could get in trouble for not havign them out in the boat within easy reach.

For all you Ontario boaters, here's your regulations checklist...

Here is the link to the type IV throwable. I see where it is required in the boat but I don't see where it has to be within an arms reach. I would be curious to know as well.

It depends on what state you live in. Every state has different rules, which reminds me I need to check into Oklahoma's rules and regulations since we go there often to boat.
