I picked this up yesterday.
1987 Grumman 16.5 foot Fish n Ski Package. Includes 90 hp Evinrude Motor and Yacht Master Trailer. Many updates including new flooring, carpet, padding, seats and trailer parts. Also has Ray Marine Fish Locator, depth finder, two batteries and travel cover. Great boat for fishing, tubing, skiing and family fun. Low price - come and see today!

I read on here and knew I should have done a water test, but just had him run it in the driveway with muffs.

He said it did have a small misfire at high rpm, and he had a marine mechanic locally look at it and it just needs to be driven more. But I found out the hard way, anything above 2000 rpm has a loud thud. It is like someone is rearending the boat.

Should I just bite the bullet and have a mechanic look at it and fix it, or should I make this guy take it back?

Your choice, but it sounds like your in for a clutch dog and fwd gear.

Well it depends on how great a deal you think you got. Did you allow yourself enough $ for catastrophic repairs? It sounds like lower unit trouble, probably needs clutch dog and gears. Won't be cheap.

How bad of a price am I looking? Hopefully not much more than $800......

I might see if he will take it back since he said he had a mechanic look at it and said it was fine.

Sounds like an expensive repair. Try approaching the seller and see what happens, however don't hold out a lot of hope. He has dumped his boat now and you will most likely get the "buyer beware" thing back at you.

You are looking at no less than $500-$600. That is without knowing what else might be damaged in there.

I talked to the guy that sold it to me and he dropped off the paperwork from the Marine shop that looked it over on 8/3/09.

He said to call them tomorrow and call me back. So far he seems pretty nice about it, but we will see after tomorrow.

On the repair order it list:

check lower unit oil leaking from prop area
resolution:checked lower unit oil and found that unburnt fuel oil mix recomment useing carbon gaurd and run in gas

check engine over at high rpms missing
resolution:found that exhaust gasket is leaking, replaced gasket, exhaust gasket plate is missing bolts replaced, exhaust outlet hose for cooling leaking, resealed
note:when exhaust plate was removed found lots of carbon in exhaust ports use carbon guard in shok treatment for best results

He again said it would do it a little something when he was at higher rpm, but not as bad as I had said it did (anthing 2500+ rpm) every twenty seconds or so.

You are looking at no less than $500-$600. That is without knowing what else might be damaged in there.

I was thinking nearer the $1,000 mark if a shop does it.

Same thing happened to me with my Evinrude 1961 Lark III 40 HP. It ran fine in the 30 second clip he showed me and started up fine on the trailer. But when I took it out the first time it felt like someone was banging the transom with a sledge hammer every 20 seconds or so. I was told just parts would be over $600!

So, I scouted Craigslist for a week or so and found a "parts motor" that needed rings or something for $100. Swapped out the clutch dog and fwd & reverse gears and, bingo!, I'm in business. Got a bunch of other spare parts for future use in the bargain.

Just my two cents worth...

It sounds like a good idea, and I have been searching craigslist for lower units, and complete motors. Only problem is, I am a TOTAL noobs when it comes to boats and motors. I do work on my 71 nova, and my daily drivers when I must, but have no clue how hard this is and what years (and if johnsons) are interchangeable.

I noticed that there looks to be marks from where a washer/bolt used to be on the motor, the piston for the tilt/trim area. Should there be a bolt here, or no?

Well yeah, what's holding the upper end of the shock absorber--nothing? There is supposed to be a pin through there.

I am too new to this, so I had no idea to look. Could this cause my banging? Please say yes! Is this pin supposed to be removable, and if so, why and when would you remove it? Would you remove it only to tilt it up high enough to put the...... what would you call it, tab down to support the motor when trailering?

I am new, please try to give as much detail as possible as I am VERY green. Would a non TNT have the same thing?

that bolt should never be out. my guess is that's your issue...do you actually loose power when you hear this or are you just feeling a banging..

I'm thinking it should only be removed for servicing/removing the tilt/trim unit!

i would think that the missing pin would allow flexing under power and thus you get your banging on the transom my friend.i would bet you that if you get that pin and install your problems are over for the banging noise.good catch on your part, you proably saved yourself a ton of money.in this case id say a picture is worth a thousand bucks!lol.

The non-tnt has a shock absorber to control the violent up-tilt upon striking an underwater object. I believe some of them also act as a tilt aid to make it easier to tilt.

Just banging so far, but was so worried that my mind was just going overtime and could not be 100% sure otherwise.

I will start with buying another pin and go from there.

I agree with all. The bangiing your hearing is probably the motor coming out of the water and slamming back on the transom. In forward it will probably only happen at high rpm because the speed and force on the front of the lower unit overcomes the prop and lifts it out of the water to point that the prop force is stronger and slams it back down.

I went to the marine shop that did the work at the beginning of the month, and they did not have a new one in stock, so he swipped one from a used motor, brought it home, but it was too big. So I ordered one new, but it will be a couple of days.

They said it would be really odd that is was missing, as they don't remove the pin when they work on it (I asked if by chance they still had it from when it was serviced).
