Re: I know nothing and have some questions.

There are no real makes to avoid, it all depends how the boat has been looked after. A well maintained boat is a good boat, regardless of make.
For the money you want to spend, I don't think that swapping makes of outdrive are reasonable. You don't say what outdrive the Bayliner has..

If possible try to choose a boat with a mercruiser or Volve outdrive as parts are hard to find for other makes of outdrive.

This bayliner is looking so good...
running, ready to go now.
1987 Bayliner Stingray
Overhauled upper engine with new water pump, and replaced the points ignition with a new electronic ignition. The boat is powered by a 3.0 4 cylinder Chevy engine that runs great and the trailer has new bearings and road ready. Cables need to be adjusted and stearing is a little tight due to possible bad bushings in the outdrive.

I'm getting more pictures and will talk to the guy tomorrow, his girl was the only one home when I called. It's a 3hr drive away...
any advice?

also if anyone has a problem with this thread being in the engine section let me know and I'll stop posting in it.
Thanks everyone

If it has a OMC Cobra outdrive you might want to think twice about buying it, I ended up buying one and got lucky as it was very well maintaned. OMC went under in 1990.
