1986 Mariner OB1 75 Hp Mariner Engine on a 1986 Fisher 16 foot Bass boat, some of you may have seen some of my "no spark issues questions" but sitting here at work at the Fire House I just had a thought....with the key in the ignition, is there a "clip" "thingmojiggy" or something that the " red kill teather" connects to? Or is it just connected to the key? I believe it is a Commander control but not exactly sure?:facepalm:

Best I could say is....possibly....but, I do not know for sure.....sounds like the boat my father in law had years ago and it had a kill switch you had to tie into and ideally clip to your vest so if you are thrown out it kills the motor....also would keep it from starting

Very Possible Engine344. The best way to find out is to look at a diagram of your controls if you can't see anything obvious on your boat. I'm not sure what year they started adding the kill switches, but if you have a "kill" toggle or a lanyard safety switch, it would effectively keep your motor from having spark. Been there, done that....

There is an old red lanyard up under the seat with both ends rotted off, but some have clips, some just pull the key, some pull out a slug? Just wanted to know if this rang a bells with anybody?

View attachment 90209If the lanyard is worn the pull out on the swtich will kill the electrical system and it will not start fire etc you can disconect this and cross the wires if you do not have another lanyard. everything should work fine after that. if you cannot undo the switch it must be pulled outward to make the connection for the ignition. use vise grips to hold out the kill switch. while testing good luck. I totally removed my saftey kill switch from 1750 procraft bass boat I actually have a seperate ignition flip kill swith independant of the key ignition switch that use use just to push choke and start the engine. That saftey kill switch is as described in an earlier post in case you fall overboard under power. The lanyard pulls the clip and the switch closes killing igniton so you boat dosn,t run away or run you over. One place to find the switch is on the remote control below the ignition switch if your control has the ignition switch inside of it. otherwise search for the round switch that the clip would fit into. I went out to see if I still had the old lanyard and I do with 2 different size clipsYou can get thes used off eBay for about $10.00 used and up to 39.00 new with all clips. I,m broke or I,d send you mine

Bingo

Neutral safety switch will prevent cranking, however the kill switch.......
been there, done that.

However, this question should have been on the original thread.

J, I know it should have been....but it just hit me today....believe me I am banging my head on the desk at work. I still think I also have a mercury switch issue also for the tilt? There are alot of squirls in this wood pile just trying to weed out a botch job from a previous owner. I am sorry for all the post, just trying to narrow this down with a little help?

Max is that lanyard for a Mariner/ Merc set up.....if so what year?

P.S. I live in a very rural area and I am awaiting the 90.00 service manual I ordered....just trying to square a few things away!

Re: I know there is no such thing as a dumb question, However

Let me try to talk you back in off the ledge. I know the feeling about cleaning up someone elses work. I shot about a dozen faults out of my XR4, most put in by a "certified" mechanic.

First thing in troubleshooting a no spark issue is to disconnect the kill wire from the switchboxes, and then check for spark. If you then have spark, put an ohmmeter on one of the kill wires which will be shorted to ground, and find the switch, pinched wire, mouse bite, or whatever that's grounding it.

BTW, the kill circuit on this motor grounds out to kill. Open to run.

hope it helps

Re: I know there is no such thing as a dumb question, However

this particular lanyard was connected to a yamaha throttle the engine that was on it was a yamaha 115 from the previous owner I just bought the boat. It doesn,t matter what type throttle it came off of. what matters is the thickness nedded to keep the saftey kill switch out far enough to make the connection lanyards are universal. I had 2 of probably 7 to 10 different keys (Plastic Rings) look close at the pic you,ll see the difference in these 2 one is thin the other is thick

Re: I know there is no such thing as a dumb question, However

The kill switch on my 88 controls is a toggle switch under the key with a guard on it positioned so that if you raise the switch to the up position with a ring around it, and then pull the ring off, it'll flip the switch down to the kill position. Don't need to put the lanyard on it to make it work.

I like it, because if the driver goes over the side with the lanyard, someone else can turn the switch back on and go back to pick me up.
