Hi again folks, I know i wont get any sympathy for this one, but i am trying to do a low budget resurrection. Pulled a Rochester 2GC carb apart and the phillips screw holding the electric choke to the choke shaft wouldnt come off (stipped out) to complete the carb rebuild. I guess i lost it and got medieval on it and drilled it out. I totally messed up the shaft (got the choke off though) I am trying to keep this a cheap resurrection and I know i can buy a new/rebuilt carb for this but I hate to do that if i can just get a new shaft. The sticky manual says you have to replace the whole air horn and the shaft is not servicable but it looks to me like it would slide right in if it was in decent shape. My question is does anyone know where i can buy just a choke shaft with the plate screws? I know i can prob get a whole used one from a salvage yard but i may not be able to break those loose as well. It probably would be more than 75$ as well. I see other shafts for sale for 10$. I know boating is an expensive hobby but It s@cks to have to buy a whole new carb for just a choke shaft. Thanks in advance for your help. Side note I try to buy all my parts when available from iboats.

if i had that issue i think i'd do the air horn.
if ya could find the parts, ya could try to R&R it. but i'd hope the parts was cheap. my 2gc stove pipe type choke plate looks pretty permanat to the shaft. like somoeone didn't want me to take it apart. parts are peaned and staked in place, not good for getting a successful R&R.

also hope that time is not money. cause i'd think it'd be slow careful work.

imho..

Zig, i dont know anyplace that just sells the air horn. (back to buying the whole carb) I imagine there has to be some carbs out there that are corroded to sh*t that still have the shaft intact but dont know a good source. Anyone have any sources please?

Find a junk yard or a pick and pull. Those carbs are a dime a dozen...

Not in florida Alphe. Most yards around here crush older vehicles. Any suggestions on yards?

Wait a minute. I didnt want to buy a used carb (prob 75$+ and in this economy is just crazy talk). Just looking for choke shaft (or air horn) for a 2GC rochester for under 30$.

That shaft is no longer available new. Nor do I think it's an easy task to remove it and replace it....but possible I suppose. That carburetor has been around for decades, so just Google Rochester Marine Carburetors and find some local carb shops and marinas, and start calling them. Most of those guys have piles and piles of those parts. At the very least you'll be able to find a complete air horn.

How bad did you screw up the shaft, is the butterfly ok? It can probably be fixed, thats not too critical of a piece, you can run without it, just may be a little hard cold starting.

I was just at a boat salvage yard and I was looking around and saw a huge box full of Rochester carbs in various states of disasembly. Give these guys a call and tell them what yu are looking for. Im sure they can send you what you need...
