I have finally joined the group of "stupid human tricks while fishing." Went fishing today hoping to hook into a sturgeon. After an hour of no luck thought I would try a different spot. Started to pull up anchor and after retrieving about 30' of the rope the anchor was stuck. I started my boat and attempted to move around to try and losen the anchor. As I was moving around the line was paying out from my bin where the anchor line was stored. And yes before I knew it there goes the end of the line over the boat. No more anchor and no more fishing. What was I thinking?!

Re: I Lost It

About 10-years ago I lost an anchor in the shell reef in Monterey Bay. The first thing I do is follow the anchor line down and sent the anchor really good, wedging it in. The last thing I do is dislodge the anchor before returning to the boat. On this particular day I forgot to dislodge it. I could have gone back down and got it but I was concerned about the day’s diving activities and the N2 loading. After trying several times, pushing and pulling from different angles, I cut the rode and came home.

Re: I Lost It

A few years back I was fishing with a friend in one of his "favorite spots." It was a windy day. We had the anchor out and it kept us from drifting to fast and allowed us to fish the shoreline as the anchor dragged along the bottom.

Came time to pull up anchor and I was in the bow so I got the honors. It's 50 to 65 ft and this anchor weighs a ton. I figure it has a whole lot of mud and seaweed on it. Finally get it in and I see it has another rope tangled on it, I grab that rope and start again. At the bottom of the second rope I find a second anchor!! As i'm pulling it up the guy I'm with says it's his anchor, he lost in this spot a couple years before!!

No fish that day but we did catch something!!! In retrospect, it seems like maybe he should have kept a spare on board.
Giddyup--

Kramer

About 15 years ago, my dad and I pulled into a nice crabbing spot, and he threw out the bow anchor and then went to toss the stern anchor when the line tangled. The whole ball of wax went over board. We figured we would go by the boat store on the way home and get a new anchor. While crabbing, Dad decided to fish a little. You would not beleive what he caught!! Yep, that's right, the anchor rope that he threw overboard an hour before. I could not beleive it.

Re: I Lost It

I was out alone one windy day and for the life of me I couldnt dislodge the anchor from the bottom. I left a crab bouy tied to the rode and came back a few days later with a friend... and 2 of us couldnt budge it. 3 weeks later came back (alone again) on a calm day and it came right up! :)
Since then I have learned about a trip line and think I will try that this year. Does anyone else have any experience using a trip line on the anchor?

Re: I Lost It

a friend told me of a story about a anchor... his now wife was not really looking forward to driving his boat for the first time , they had a couple of drinks. She started up and was pulling out of a bay at high speed .. suddenly the anchor came through the cloth top and landed next to them. It had been dragging along behind and the rope must have snapped it up out of the water and onto the boat ......... can you say SOBER instantly!
