The little critters keep getting on my boat cover and making pin holes in it -- I guess they find it a huge fiberglass scratching post. Any special tricks to keep them off? Thanks much.

Re: I love my cats, but...

There is a product that you can buy at any pet store (I can’t recall the name) that you spray on your furniture to keep the cats off. People are not supposed to be able to smell it, but it really annoys the cats. I would assume that the same product would work on your canvas.

Also, cats hate to be sprayed with water. We have trained our cats to stay off things by spraying them with a windex bottle of water a few times when they venture somewhere their not supposed to be. They learn in a hurry that there is a better scratching post somewhere else.

Yea, I've heard turpintine and fire work in a simular fasion as well......... :D :D :D
12ga. is good too, although the discharging firearms in the city-limits fine is about 250.00, it's still a savings of around 2000.00-3000.00 in the long run...

Bryan-
Wally World sells a couple of varieties of 'keep off training aid', one in particular is made by Hartz. I use it to keep our cats out of the Christmas tree. Apply one or twice a day, hopefully it wont harm the canvas. (It hasn't hurt my carpet, furniture etc... Also you could ask a pet store for suggestions.

I'll try to find some of the spray tonight at our local Wally World. I caught one on the cover today, and took the garden hose to it. Problem is, in the panic that followed, he ripped more holes trying to get away from the water. The 12-gauge is sounding better all the time.

Well, this reminds me of another post from last... I think it was November.
Hey, you loser, wimp, twits flexing their total ignorance and lack of manhood by getting tough on cats with their keyboard...
Come on, lets be real and help b-fish just keep the cats off his canvas. I'm sure if he wanted to be a spineless jackass cat-killer he would have already.
Anyways...
B-fish, try a product called 'no-scratch' that's available at most pet stores. It usually works and it's cheap.

How do you make a cat go "woof"

Pour a bit of 2 stroke on it..
Throw a match...

W O O F...

But seriously.. I don't know the type of cover, you have, but if it's one that travels with the boat,(cosmetically nice) use a secondary cover stretched over the boat, and strapped to the trailer with rubber hook straps. They are made of that disposable work clothes Du-pont stuff and are about $30-50..

Re: I love my cats, but...

Hey B-fish, I live in Port Allen, Louisiana. How far are you from me. We could chain my dog to your trailer. She has not let one cat from the neighborhood in my fenced in back yard, which is where I parked my boat. If one gets through, She and I will have problems, she'll be slacking on her job. She doesn't let squirrels in either.

Here (and I bet in most other places also) Leash laws also apply to Cats. I love my dog(s) I keep them safe in a fence. Pet owners should be responsible for their pets. Check your local laws, call animal control. If the animal is trapped, in addition to fines, the owner can also be held responsible for the damage that their Cats did to your property. You can also purchase a Cat trap at a Home Depot, or a Sports Academy.

Other than that, it you don't live in a City, and they don't have leash laws where you live. You could either take my advise, or other posted advise. Out of the others advise, I am kind of partial to the 12 guage. Just make sure its off your boat before you shoot.

GodsBeast

Re: I love my cats, but...

Magster65, have you ever had any cat problems in your boat or on your property???????
I can tell you this much, if they are scratching in your boat they are also pi$$ing in your boat.
I think this is a great topic to discuss, because there are alot of people that feed their cats outside, and by nature, other cats begin to show up...and you know darn well they are not the "house-cats" that are showing up.
I have an elderly lady accross the street from me that puts out 20lbs. of special kitty a week, because she feels sorry for the skinny cats that show up.
If you fish with your boat, chances are that at some time it may smell somewhat like a fish (cat-attractant) unless you clean your boat with bleach, sooner or later you're gonna have a FEE-FEE check it out.
I have a 1979 18' STARCRAFT that I spent 4-1/2 years rebuilding to near perfection with my own blood, sweat, and tears, and It'll be a cold day in _ell before I stop trapping cats on my property. Cats have been an issue in my city long enough that animal control will not even address this issue anymore because they have nowhere to go with the cats!!!
It has become a "we'll turn our back and you do as needed".
Those of us that wish to handle the situation at hand "OUR WAY", are not the spineless, Heartless people you talk of, The tree-hugging cat-lovers that can't be responsible for their cats are the LOOSERS that need the "W O O F" treatment....
I will continue to protect my investment as needed and the bottom line is that the gentleman that started this topic will handle his situation as needed, and hopefully it favors his boat!
2 thumbs up to "CATS.......THE OTHER WHITE MEAT" :D

quoth the One Woman NO WOOFING Parade

"they are mean hearted people, you wouldnt do something like that to our Buggy would you??"

of COURSE not .. unless she was messing up one of the boats, lol, so now I am in the cathouse, er, doghouse over that one, but I stand by what I said, humane measures would absolutely be taken, and when its MY hard work being desecrated, mouse traps and pepperspray is definitely more humane than the 12 gauge option (well, the 410 option is more sporting, esp if ya use rocksalt :D )

Re: I love my cats, but...

Walleyehed, The cats in my neighborhood are the same probably. I dig the kitty-poo out of my garden too. The little buggers tick me right off and I loathe the sight of one of those critters strolling across my lawn, heading for the flowerbed. However, not once have I lost my marbles to the point of typing a message in boating forum to threatening to kill cats. It's so stupid... no offense and I understand your frustration but I think the 'get tough on kittys' attitude sucks.
This is kinda' what the other thread ended up like too.
Surely you people are smarter than the cats... aren't you?

Re: I love my cats, but...

Magster65, I think what most of us are trying to say, is of course we are smarter than the cats, they are not the root of the problem. The Owners are the problem. SOME Owners, THINK NOTHING, of allowing their pets to roam freely, not having to deal with the nusience or the damage they cause. I also understood that BrianRedFish MAY have been talking about his own cats. If they are his own, this was my suttle way of making him realize that by keeping them contained and away from his boat, he may not only prevent further damage to his boat, but may prevent harm to the animals he loves. If they are not his cats he is talking about, I gave him the same advise I give people that make this same complaint to me on my job. Because, like it or not, there are people out in the public that after enough damage to their Boats, Vehicles, flower gardens, insulation being torn out from under trailers (to have litters) and countless nights without sleep hearing their mating screems. (Dogs Constantly Barking also apply) People usually try the first step. Call Animal Control. Usually you get the old, we will bring a trap, when one come available, (they usually add that they have a waiting list, and you may be in for a long wait, because there is so many Complaints). That is why I added that he may wish to purchase his own Cat Trap, because one may not be available though his Local Animal Control (If his area even has one). After a person looses enough sleep, and can not get help from the proper channels they tend to take matters into their own hands. Then the same people with no concearn for their Animals running loose to get run over, and reek havac, began screeming Animal Cruelty. I think it's more cruel to allow the Animal (That you love) to roam Unsupervised. I had a Neighbor that I had to press charges on approximatly 6 times in a 3 month period, about his Dogs and Cats being on My Property. (Front Yard, if they would have been in the back yard, my Dog would have taken care of the problem) They were Barking under my Bedroom Window, his cats spraying my wife's Hibiscus plants, and flower garden, getting on my Patrol Car, (If they would have gotten on my wife's Dodge, I told him to his face, what I'd do). He had a German Shepard, which constantly got out and would come under my carport and bark and growl at my wife, trying to get out of her truck coming home from work, and growling at her through the Storm door, while she was watching TV in our own living room. Again I marched over and told him that if his Shepard came on my property barking and growling at me, or agressivly came at one of my nieces, or growled at my wife again, that I WAS GOING TO SHOOT THE DOG WITH A SHOTGUN, and it would have been completely legal. So, the animals are just being animals, but why should LAW ABIDING TAX PAYING CITIZENS have to go and spend their hard earned money trying to find some way of keeping someone else's animals off their own property.

The problem with my neighbor ended with me using every legal means available, with many of my coworkers help, (other neighbors pressing charges also, and so much pressure, that the City Court ordered his animals picked up, because of having too many on his property. He still has the Shepard and a mixbreed Rottweiler, and what I told him earlier still goes. Point being that the avarage Citizen may not have the time to invest in using every legal means available. Remember this was 3 months of dealing with HIS PROBLEMS. I was trying to keep my job, by not shooting his animals. Trying to set a good example. The average person may just be driven to shooting and paying the fine if he gets caught. So the animal itself is not the problem, its the OWNER, and you can only charge them, if you KNOW who owns them. What do you think happens to all those animals that gets picked up, and the Owner won't come forward to claim it, because there is a fine waiting for them for Animal at Large. What do they usually do, go get them another little kitty that is so cute, while it is young, play with it, and once it grows up, they put it out, because the fun is over, and the breeding continues.

No really its not the animal that needs shooting, but if I were to say what I THINK needs shooting, (and I bet there are average people that would agree with me) I guess some folks would have a COW. With my luck it would end up on my front lawn.

Just one of GodsBeast's

Seriously.. Cat's are OK ..Live and let live, but they don't only pee on boats, they kill wildlife and need to be kept indoors at night so they don't get involved in an accident.... :D
A pro-active council..

http://www.surfcoast.vic.gov.au/cat.htm

Re: I love my cats, but...

Good God almighty, I opened up a can of worms with this post. I never thought a couple of ***** cats would cause the commotion on this board. World War III over two *****s. Who'd of thought...

Allow me to clarify. The cats are mine, and are mostly indoors, but are outdoors a good bit of time. We have no children, and live out in the country. The cats are our children (no, we're not as weird as it sounds). I was just looking for a surefire chemical, trick, or advice to keep the cats off of the boat cover. By the way, I keep them out of the boat (when covered) by placing aluminum foil at the stern opening. They HATE the sound and texture of the foil.

Re: I love my cats, but...

Bryanredfish, what you see on this thread is what makes the USA great......we all are allowed to have our opinions-good or bad. I guess the main problem I see, is because cats are decendants of the wilder variety, they kill out of instinct, not hunger......and when you enter a boating post, you are bound to cross the people that hunt as well, and cats have gained a bad rep. for killing young pheasants, quail, loads of small rabbits, and yes,a few mice-which by the way is why they are here in north america now- they are native to China, not the USA. They got here on ships where they were used to help control mice on the long seaward journeys, so I hope you get the problem taken care of, and continue on!!!! :)
