Your project is looking great but why would you NOT replace the stringers after going that far. I'm an old guy who has been fooled by the "apparent condition" of wood more times than I care to admit. Do it once, do it right and then enjoy it for the long-term. Good luck and thanks for sharing!

i have to agree. cut them all the way out, there's moisture in there. i was thinking of only cutting out sections but not only would it take longer but you'd still have old stuff down there.

I was having one of those days 2 weeks ago. Everything was coming out fast and easy until the grinder got away from me. It spun around and attacked my knee. Had to get 5 stitches, lukily it didnt cut anything that couldent be fixed. Be carefull and good luck!

Haha i dont mean to laugh at you but i had a similar experiance with the grinder. I took the handle off trying to get it into a tight place. Lets just say that didnt work out soo good for my forearm!! a couple inches lower on me and it would have got my wrist right where the main vein runs through there!!!! I didnt get stiches though i just put butterflies and it bled a little for a couple of days. I just had to put anti bac. ointment and keep pulling the wound together with the butterflies!! Took a couple of days for it to stop bleeding. I would have had to get 10 stiches if i went in to the hospital. I dont ever get them though unless i cant keep a limb without them.

Yes I am going to replace them as they are not the right size anyhow! they are just 2X6's that are the same size all the way. Thats why when i got the boat that I had to fill in gaps in the hull where the stringers should have been a little shorter in the stern and a little taller in the bow area. Im gong to use string across the hull in order to measure for new stringers and there should be more of them also than just that box of wood thats in the center of the boat thats in the shareaproject pages. Should be about 4 pieces of timber running from transom to the bow. Its going to be tough to measure the size of the stringers but im not going to use 2X6's like the previous owner did. Im going to use Ply and glass 1/2" ply together and sister them as needed from the transom all the way up to the bow. It might only be 1/2 inch deep in some places up near the bow but thats how im going to do it! Im going to do it right since ive gone this far. I think the hardest part is over as the grinding is almost done. Now its still a lot of work but its more materials now that are needed and money. Thats ok since i do have some what of a budget on this. What kind of ply should i use for the stringers? I Dont want to use PT ply really as the 2X6's that were there were PT type and they are not too bad of shape but the resin that was around them was not sticking to them at all!! I got the grinder out and ground close to the hull and made a line and ground at the top corner of the stringer and the resin and glass in some places came out in 1 piece from the bow all the way back to the transom. All in 1 piece! I dont think the resin bonded with the PT wood ever whey the Previous owner redid it. He did not use any glass but the resin should still have bonded to the wood 2X6's but they were PT and i think that was the problem!!! Im not going to use solid timber! Thanks for all the encouragement guys!!!

Re: I made more progress today than ever!!

Here is part of the stringer system in a picture. Like u was saying it is just 2X6's that are not cut to depth at all they are 2X6 all the way, anywhere they are run!! Im going to replace them with 2 layers of ply that are bonded together with mat and roving. Then im going to mat, roving, mat, roving, them all down onto a bed of the PL Polyurathane adheasive for a "bed"for them. Ive seen a couple of people use that PL poly stuff now in the caulk tube and thats what i have decided that im going to use. Im going to first put 1 layer of Mat across the entire inside hull though before i install the stringers! Is that a good idea? As i think it will help in case there is something i dont know about i can at least know that i laid 1 layer of glass acrost the entire inner hull!! I got to get everything perfectially cleaned up though 1st! Thanks again for all the ecouragement guys!! If i knew i was going to run into all of this i most likely would have not started. But im glad i did cause now im going to have a brand new boat for not as much money as labor to myself!!
