There are lots of different answers to your questions but in order for anyone to answer them with any kind of accuracy you need to provide more info.

1.Where are you located
2. What are you looking for as far as engine size
3. Do you have anything you are trying to match up to? OMC, Mercruiser etc....

Those will get things started at least.

Re: i need a motor

well i am looking to fix up a 25 foot 1978 carver yacht santa cruz. It currently does not have a motor and i do not really know what it had before it was taken out but i think it needs about 220 hp. i was hoping to find a good deal on a motor (used or rebuilt) because i do not really want to ahve to buy a new one because they can be costly. i am in nc right now

What kind of drive? With a 25' boat, you will need at least a 5.7 Chevy. But you chan't just pull a used engine out of a car or truck and use it.
The fuel and electrical system MUST be marine rated and there is also all the accessories you will need, depending on drive.

Re: i need a motor

Definitely answer the questions posed above, these guys are the ones you want to talk to here... they'll get you the info, cover the questions, and get it all right.

That said, to answer your original question, here's the place I got my motor last summer: "www.rapidomarine.com[/url]. It's a smaller shop, in FL, but they stand behind their product pretty well. A couple folks here have bought from them, and the last time the owner posted he was offering a discount to iboats members.

Other options for a motor include watching craigslist and ebay for a used motor, purchasing a truck motor and converting it with marine parts, buying a new marine motor from one of the OEMs, or buying a new motor from somewhere like ebasicpower.com.

But definitely answer the questions above first.

Erik

Edit: Thanks for fixing that Don... weird, I could swear I didn't try to make it clickable.

It had better be a nice 1978 boat though. That will be a $15000+ route.

Ayuh,.......

It might be Cheaper to buy a Donor Boat,+ Junk It............

AHHH! Hey ringmaste this isn't your ring! No one is buying or selling here. Advice on where to get something is different. We have moderators that keep a good EYE on the rules and enforce them. Iwake if we can identify the type of drive by a look at the stern, or transom plate and go from there, because> if it had a volvo and you buy a merc the transom cutouts are different and will intail alot more work/money. ;)

Speaking of needing an engine, I've got a 3.7L 170 that I'm considering replacing with either a 3.0L 4 cylinder or 3.4 6cyl. It looks like I can get a lot better deal on a 3.0 and the mounts look the same so I'm thinking it would be less of a headache to replace. What do you guys think?

I think you need to start a new thread with your question, and not hijack someones elses thread.
