Ok, I need a new cover for my Wellcraft Eclipse. I was looking at Custom fit covers or Semi-Custom fit Covers? What is the real difference? Its a trailer queen and will only be covered when sitting on the trailer and waiting to get used. Also what about fabric differences? There are several for sale on Iboats website, or should I have a local canvas guy make one?

I know. But what about the difference between a custom cover and semi custom cover and a custom cover made with your boat sitting there?

Try a telephone cal to iboats and talk with them.

Now I am "old school" and will not use my cover for winter storage (far too much nasty ice and snow in my area).

They are going to try to up sell the custom cover. Is there really that big of a difference?

IMO custom fits much better which helps with repelling water and preventing puddles....look better too

Re: I need a new cover

I just purchased a "custom" one from I-Boats to help support the forum. The guy who assisted me on the phone was very nice and helpful. Cover is expected to arrive the end of this week. I will let you know what I think about it then (if you can wait that long). But, the "sale" price of about 350.00 seemed pretty reasonable based upon my research. Plus, as noted, I wanted to support this site.

I also think alot has to do with what you are going to do with it. Just a cover to keep rain, dust, etc out the semi custom would probably be fine but if you plan on trailering on the freeway I would lean more toward the custom cover. Alot of the universal and semi custom (fancy term for universal) covers claim to be trailerable and are to a certian extent, but for a reliable good looking and functionable cover you need to go with a custom to your boat cover. Then it gets more into what you want to spend a good custom cover is going to be expensive but the performance is worth the extra $$ in my opinion. I never travel with my winter cover even though it says you can, I use it to keep the elements out here in Utah we get some nasty winters. But I always travel with the snap covers those I spent the money and had a canvas shop custom make and they have performed very well for a number of years. With any of them you need to figure out some means of support to keep water, snow etc from pooling that will trash a cover quicker than anything.

Re: I need a new cover

I picked up a Semi-Custom cover from Iboats for my 69 StarCraft BowRider.(profile) InStock Special $229.99 delivered! Very nice. SharkSkin Trailerable with plenty of straps to keep it snug. Extremely pleased. Doubt that I could have had one made locally for that. Plus it supports iboats. Summer issue cover only. Boat is stored inside for the winter. Until spring.....Cheers!

Considering the cover is what is protecting a costly investment, and is one of the cheapest insurance policy's you can buy..buy the best. How many threads start with "My deck is soft" and wonder how THAT happened, or the upholstery is mildewed..sheesh,custom covers are made for YOUR specific boat, not so with semi..which fit a wide range of boats..Why does that matter ??well, if its custom it will fit tight..no water gathers..creating a pool which will rip the cover.custom covers are reinforced at stress points..IE:windshield,,bow..transom plus a good cover..well maintained, lasts years..i'm going on 6 years with my custom sunbrella cover..and bought a sharkskin from iboats last year and trailered it to Georgia & back, all at highway speeds..no problem. Its a "false economy" to purchase a cheap cover.

I'd say it really depends on how much your boat costs/value And/or how much you care about it
I've been there/done that on one size fits all covers :(
Never again-----------

Re: I need a new cover

Just wanted to update my post to this thread. The custom cover I bought from IBoats arrived 2 days earlier than expected. It fits great, looks nice, appears well constructed. This was my first purchase from IBoats and all I can say is....the service was fantastic from the person that helped me on the phone to the early arrival date. 100% satisfied. Thanks IBoats - you now have one more loyal customer.
