I have a 1973 65 hp Evinrude motor. For starters, I can't identify the aluminum prop that is on it now. The only number that I can find on it is: PAC269, but the P could be a B, and the C a G. It's pretty banged up . I'm sure about the 269 though. The diameter of the prop seems to be about 12" using the method of measuring from the center of the hub nut out to the tip of one of the blades and multiplying that number by 2. I looked in my factory service manual and couldn't find any part numbers, just a list of sizes that were available, the smallest of which was 12 3/4". The manual also lists the full throttle at 4500-5500 rpms, I don't have a tach. Other than being beat up, this prop performs poorly imho. My boat is only a 15.5 ft center console with a fairly deep v in the front. It struggles to pull an adult on a tube or kneeboard, and the motor itself is fine so that's not the problem. The prop that the manual says is "supplied with the motor" is a 13 1/4" X 17 pitch. I could probably just buy one of those but I want to make sure I buy exactly what is right for me. Thanks in advance. John.

If you can't identify what it is take it to a prop shop and ask them to identify it and tell you if it is repairable for a reasonable price. You can buy a new prop for 100.

Yeah I plan on buying a new aluminum (stainless is just too much for my blood). I just would like to make sure I'm buying the right size/pitch prop that will serve me best. Is there any way to measure pitch? I can take a pic if that would help someone estimate?? If not, whats a good pitch that won't rob much top speed (cause it is still a fishin boat ;)), but still let me haul a full load of people or pull a tube/kneeboard?

BigJ, exactly what year, make and model of boat is this. What is the base weight and how many people do you usually carry in it.

Boat is a 1987 Traveler 15.5 CC. Boat + Motor weighs about 1100-1200 lbs (according to nada and service manual + estimated weight of batteries and equipment). Normal load is 2-3 big guys and fishing gear.

The only specs I have for that motor show the RPM to be between 5,000 and 6,000 and a gear ratio of 2.42. But I believe this wrong so can you tell me what it is.

Full throttle operating range: 4500-5500 rpm
Propeller gear ratio: 12:29

J, my program recommends a 16" pitch prop, but I will recommend a 15" Turning point aluminum they are cheap on Iboats, if you can't find one to fit then just get an inexpensive 15" aluminum prop. The reason I recommend the 15" is trhat you appear to always be carrying a heavy load and you want to pull a tube. These are my numbers for your applications.

So you're suggesting a 15 pitch? I am assuming that the lower the number, the better the pulling power?

The 15 should work but a prop shop can measure your prop.
and give you an idea if a 15 will work better. If your allready at 15 you may have to go lower. You should have a tach.It is the only way to be sure your motor is operating within its rpm range. The wrong prop wastes fuel and can be detrimental to the motor.

Re: I need a new prop for my old Evinrude.

Just to update this, I bought a 15" pitch aluminum prop from the iboats store (for $95 and free shipping :)) and got it out for a test run yesterday. It was an 100% improvement over the old POS I had on there. The 15" gives me much more bite out of the hole and my top speed with two people and gear went from 28-29 to a solid 30 mph. The motor also doesn't seem like it's straining as bad, so I'm sure that will be good in the long run. Can't wait to get my smart tabs on this weekend, it will be like a whole new boat. Kudos to all who helped, especially hwsiii. Thanks again. John.

John, I am very glad that you have a better prop and that you are happy, when you get the smart tabs you will be even happier.
