I NEED a TELEFLEX STEERING EXPERT!!

Due to lack of planning on my part, I have a problem trying to install a steering wheel/cable system. I already have the end connected to my motor and removing that end and re-installing would be a major headache. My choices now are cut a huge hole in the console to fit everything thru, or remove the bolts shown in the picture so mounting assembly comes off, leaving just the cable and long black thing to fit thru a hole, which would be no problem. My question is can I remove those 4 bolts without having things flying all over or causing problems to reassemble. Looks to me like there might just be a simple gearing setup under that cover but since I'm not sure I thought I'd ask here first. Thanks in advance for any help.

Pictures 2 and 3 are close-ups of the 4 bolts in question.

EDIT:Well, I was moving to fast again!! Didn't even notice the warning till I posted the pics. I'm guessing removing those 4 bolts is not a good idea.

its not complicated at all, and you dont need an expert, just unbolt it. its just a rack on a pinion gear

I'm not sure I understand why removing the wheel from the shaft will not solve your problem. Are you saying you have no access down the side of the boat and then back and under the dash to where the steering shaft mounts? I guess I'm gunna need pics to unerstand the issue.

I'm just sayin...:D

I agree with wood, Even if you put it in from the helm to the motor first it wouldnt have made a difference. Unless you cant fit it into the side of your console? not through the dash.

Re: I NEED a TELEFLEX STEERING EXPERT!!

Im not sure how you (wood and jim) and me are going different in our thinking but maybe I can clear things up. Or make them muddier

Pics 1 and 2 are the console I am mounting the steering wheel on. It is not in the boat yet because I want to mount the steering wheel first so I can mount the console where the length of the steering cable dictates. Pic 3 is the steering assembly with the steering wheel and mounting hardware removed and is what I need to fit thru the hole in the side of the console. Pic 4 is after removing the 4 bolts I first asked about. Pic 5 is what I will now put thru the hole in the side of the console and then reassembly everything. Except I think I may have to make another hole in the side of the console because this is a steering wheel/assembly from another boat and it doesn't look like it will line up the same. Did I miss some other way of mounting everything or wasn't my original explanation clear? Also, remember the other end of the steering cable is already routed thru the transom splashwell and mounted to the motor. And since I would have to move the motor over on the transom to remove and replace the cable, AND since I sold the cherrypicker I used to take the motor off another boat and mount it on this one.....That's what lead me to my original question. :D

I'm not sure what these warnings are about but my disassembly seemed simple enough. I guess maybe it applies to further disassembly.

Also a BIG thanks to westtexasrepublic for your reply. Even though it ended up being pretty much like I was thinking it would be, I'm not sure I would have had the confidence to take it apart without your reply, after seeing all those warnings. But I have to admit, I was going really SLOW and still waiting for things to start flying out. :D
