Last year my out drive seized and I found metal shavings in it after a fresh rebuild, it is completely locked up. Long story but moving on. I guess my options are to rebuild it myself, buy a new or used original unit which I am learning that they are hard to come by, or buy one of the SE116 units and save a few $$$. My questions are, are the SE116 a quality piece, is the old unit rebuildable, or should I stay with factory Mercruiser. It is a 96 Bayliner Capri 2050. Kind of hard to drop 3-4k into a 25 year old boat, but I have always been happy with it, starts every time. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, how many units have you gone through, I see some SEI reviews that are not so kind which makes me question if SEI vs Mercruiser is worth the extra money.

The SEI is chineesium,... that said, they are a full on copy of the Merc original. In my own experience, other than the crappy paint they work fine and are worth the money.

No way you are gonna be able to rebuild a drive yourself without spending more on just the tooling than the drive is worth. Especially compared to an SEI price with a 3 year no fault warranty.
