I need an alternator, right?

Last season I got stranded in the middle of the lake with a dead battery. After getting it home, I hooked up the muffs for some testing. I had my volt meter on both battery terminals and measured something like 11.9 volts. I then started the engine and ran it up to about 1400 RPM. There was no change in the voltmeter reading. Does this confirm I've got a bad alternator or can it be something else? I pulled the alternator and attempted to have it tested at the local Kragen Auto Supply, but they said they couldn't hook up to it without knowing what kind of car it came out of. When I told them it was out of a boat, they said "sorry, can't help you without the proper plug to test it".

Take it to starter/alternator shop in your area (look in phone book, not online) and have it tested and probably repaired cheaper than replacing.
The little kids at some auto stores just don't have a clue.

Take the alternator and the battery. They can test both.

Hey, those little kids need to work somewhere?

"You want fries with that?"

Re: I need an alternator, right?

The question is what was the voltage reading at the output terminal ?
bettery voltage or no voltage? The alternator can`t charge if it`s not connected to the battery.

Latest statistics show that in some areas its the bottom 50% that fall into that category. Ever notice that carpet and other flooring is now priced by the square foot as well as square yards? The reason i was given by a large carpet store was that a good amount of the population does not know how to calculate square yards. Sad!
