I need an IE7 desk top icon

I am tuning up an old Dell XP machine that has sat in the closet since my Father in Law's passing 5 years ago. It has taken all afternoon to do all the missed updates, including Service Pack 3.

In the process, I downloaded Internet Explorer 7 (It had IE6 and I didn't want to go for 8)

After the IE7 update, the big blue E icon on my desktop and my quick launch tray no longer work. When you click on them a blank page flashes up on the screen then disappears.

I thought maybe I could not open IE7 to get on the internet but I went to Window Updates up on the Start box and it loaded a browser right up. So I know that IE7 works but something is wrong with the icon links.

I would like to get a working big blue E back as that is what I use on all the other 'puters. I do like uniformity.

Can anyone assist? I thought about downloading IE8 to see if it would give me working icons but I would rather not do it.

Right click on the existing icons on your desktop and click delete, Then click Start, find the internet explorer icon, right click on it and select send to>desktop
It should work from the desktop then
Then click Start, find the IE icon again and right click on it and select, Add to quick launch
That's all I can come up with at the moment but it should work

Agree with above.
When you changed from ie6 to 7 the path for the shortcut got lost.

As above , but for me an easier method is to close all windows then click the "start" button and and then drag and drop the big blue e onto the desktop.

Exactly what Pongy is ending up doing, just easier for my "analog age" hands. :)

Re: I need an IE& desk top icon

For your IE short cuts,

Navigate to this location:
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Delete the shortcut that doesn't work.
use the start menu and find the IE that works, right click - Send to - Desktop (create short cut)

Now drag the shortcut to the folder location. (Dont drag it to the quick launch, you just create a shortcut to the shortcut.

Now for the "Show Desktop" icon.

Open Note pad and copy and past below into notepad:
Code:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Save the file as
Show Desktop.scf (caps count here)

Save that in the folder location earlier. You should be all set.

You have to delete the shortcut icon of Internet Explorer 7 from desktop.Then from start menu right click on Internet Explorer 7 and send it to desktop. Otherwise you can just drag and drop it from start menu to desktop.Otherwise just uninstall the Internet Explorer 7 and re-install it.

....Then from start menu right click on Internet Explorer 7 and send it to desktop. ....

The link in Programs did not work either. It did the same thing as the original IE6 icon that was on the desktop. It tried to open a page then just flashed back to the desktop.

I am currently getting to the internet by using the Windows Update link that was up at the top when you hit the start button. I just redirected the link to open with my chosen MSN home page. The desktop icon for it is an MSN icon, not the big E.

If the start menu links are messed up.

Delete the short cuts from the start menu.

Start menu --> Computer --> C:\ --> Program Files --> Internet explorer
Inside this folder you will see a file called:
iexplore.exe

Right click this file, choose: "Send to" then "Desktop"

I have Windows 7 so this part may not work.
Right click on iexplore.exe --> "Pin to start menu" & "Pin to Taskbar"

I just tried that BSP. Still didn't work. I even tried to double click the .exe file, before copying it to the desktop. It too just flashed a screen.

Something goofy is going on here.

The other way that I would do this (keep in mind that it has worked for me before, but I am still an analog guy in a digital world...:rolleyes:) is to close everything down to just the desk top....right click and you should get a window with a few options.

Choose "new"...then "shortcut" and work through the "shortcut wizard"and either paste in the path below, or just browse yourself to add the path. Then complete wizard steps. This should even replace the Generic icon with the BBE that you are after....;)

Re: I need an IE7 desk top icon

At this point I would save your favorites. (shouldn't be removed anyway but just in case.)

Uninstall IE7. If you can't uninstall, Install IE7 again or IE8
Here's the download link for IE7
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3385-447C-8A30-081805B2F90B&displaylang=en

I don't want to start a browser war here. But to be honest. I rarely use IE. Too many issues.
You may want to give Firefox a try.

Lets to a bit of trouble shooting here.

Start --> Run --> Type: iexplore.exe
Does IE7 Run? Flash?
Start --> Run --> Type: iexplore.exe -extoff
Does it run now?

If I uninstall IE7,(which, at least it shows up in Add/Remove Programs) how do I use your link to reload it. Can I download and save it to a directory, uninstall IE7 then run it from the saved directory?

That link is to microsofts IE7 Setup utility.
Download the file and run it from any directory. It will start the IE7 Install.

Do you mean that I do not have to uninstall what is already there? Just reinstall the new one over the top of the existing setup?

Re: I need an IE7 desk top icon

I would uninstall. It shouldn't matter, but save your favorites.

That may remove the corrupt files. I know your install is corrupt by you saying that when you ran the iexplore.exe -extoff it flashed and closed. the -extoff turns off all extensions from IE. Essentially running in Safe mode.

I'm assuming you installed IE7 via Windows update. This can happen with many windows updates. Sometimes they corrupt.

But it's up to you. I recommend uninstalling, but if you dont want to you can simply try to reinstall over itself.

Re: I need an IE7 desk top icon

Got your point Buzz but I am still not clear. If I uninstall IE7 I am liable to not be able to get back on the internet to install and download a fresh copy.

Perhaps my Windows update link might still work but I do not know if they are tied together.

Again I ask, can I download and save the new IE7 install before I uninstall the current version, then install from the saved download?

Maybe I am being dense here but better dense than........... You get the point.

Go to all programs , accessories , system tools then Run disk cleanup , defrag the hard drive and then download ie7 again and choose overwrite existing file when downloading.

Sorry, I missed your point.

Yes, you can download this before and save to any location you like. Desktop, my docs, where ever you'll remember you saved it at. Then uninstall. The install file is about 14-17 megs. You'll be able to install from any directory (saved download).

You wont be left browser less. Once you uninstall IE7, it will revert to Internet Explorer 6. Internet explorer (no matter which version) is an integral part of Window. So it can't be totally uninstalled.

Re: I need an IE7 desk top icon

You could download Firefox or Google Chrome first and install to keep internet access, then delete and reinstall IE. I normally use Chrome but must use IE for some company stuff.
