Re: I need an IE7 desk top icon

Ok, here is the latest deal. At first I was a little mystified, now I am a lot mystified.

I uninstalled IE in add/remove programs. I went back to Windows Explirer and IE was still listed under Programs. I expanded it and sent the iexplore.exe to the desktop as a shortcut. I clicked on the shortcut and IE opened up.

I then downloaded the new IE7. The shortcut no longer worked (as before). I uninstalled IE again and went to the .exe, in Program Files, and it worked again.

After you said that after uninstall, it reverts to IE6. So I checked under Help and sure enough, it is IE6 that is opening up.

When I downloaded IE7 over it, all the same happens as described b4.

Now that IE6 is operational again, I will go see if I can uninstall it.

This is goofy!

EDIT: I went to Add/remove programs and IE no longer shows up as an uninstallable program, yet my IE6 Big E shortcuts still work?????

When you uninstall IE7, it reverts to IE6. As it should.

Now you say IE6 runs normally at this point. But you can't find it in the add/remove programs. This is also normal. When XP is installed, IE6 is installed as a core program and cannot be uninstalled.

But you install IE7 and it doesn't work..
Make sure IE7 is installed. Then run this command in the run dialog 9Start Menu-->Run
Code:
regsvr32.exe "c:\program files\internet explorer\ieproxy.dll"

Copy the whole line. This will re-register the DDL file. I've read in a few places that this fixes the IE7 hourglass issue.

Other then that.

I can only think of 3 ways to fix this issue.
1: Repair/reinstall of XP (lets not go that far.)
2: Forget about IE and use a different broswer. (Not a good option)
3: install latest service pack or reinstall the latest service pack.

From here there's a couple of things that may work.
What service pack are you running? Start menu --> right click My computer.
Should tell you in the general tab on which service pack you are running. You should be running Service pack 2 or 3. IF you are running service pack 2, I would install 3.

Re: I need an IE7 desk top icon

I did find out that IE6 was imbedded in windows and can be found in Add/remove programs under the windows components tab and that you best not try removing it.

When I reinstall IE7 it creates a new set of big E icons but neither the new ones or the old ones work any longer, nor any of the ie.exe or start menu links. That is where I have to rely on the Windows Update link to get IE? up. I don't think I have checked the IE version, with IE7 installed, when using that link to open IE.

I did download SP3.

I will try the other things that you mentioned.

I can reinstall XP as there is nothing on this unit since I started to clean it up from it's former life. If I resort to that, should I reload SP3 before I try to install IE7? I really do not remember which order I did those before.

If this computer came into my place. With what you've done so far.
Install IE7 and try to re register the Dll.

Then see if it works.
If it doesn't. Reboot to safe mode, Try IE7.
If it still doesn't work in safe mode, then something is messed up in the core files or registry. I dont like people messing in the registry if they don't know what they are doing there. It can cause more problems if they delete something incorrectly.

Since it's a new machine. Nothing on it. I would pop in the restore cd..
Download the Network install of Service pack 3 (dont let windows update do it). I have a copy of SP3 on cd. But then I work on computer almost every day. But in my pack of disks, I have Dell xp SP3 cd.

On a side note.. Has IE7 ever worked on this new install?

Re: I need an IE7 desk top icon

Ok, I reinstalled IE7, opened it with my Windows Update Link Icon. I verified that the link indeed did open up IE7. I clicked on both the new and the old Big E icons and they just flashed.

I then 'ran' the .dll file you supplied. Got a message it was accepted. What it did do is change my Windows Update shortcut icon back to the msn icon shortcut that I had sent to the desktop from the windows update link in the start menu.

The newly installed Big E icon still did not work. I went back and 'changed' the MSN icon back to a Big E from the 'system root/~~.dll selection then deleted the newly installed Big E.

The bottom line is that IE7 is working, I just have to open it with backdoor methods using a selected Big E to make it look like the real meal deal.

If I ever do reload the OS (I think it only comes with SP1) you said to not download SP3 via Windows Update (which I originally did) I did not understand the alternative.

Also, I guess I should do so before I try to update the imbedded IE6?

Re: I need an IE7 desk top icon

There's got to be something wrong with the core if all of those fail..

So yes, If you do reinstall XP, dont do the windows Update.
Go here.

That is Service Pack 3. The whole shebang. After XP is up and running, install that file. It will take some time. 10-20 minutes depending on the computer.

I have never trusted Microsoft Update for service packs. They basically look at your system, then download what you need. But if something was amiss from the system. Update may look over it.

When you have the complete service pack, it will still only install what you need. But if it sees an issue it will install over the bad files. After the install of SP3, then run your Windows Update. Confirm everything works.

I'm curious though.

Have you tried to install Internet Explorer 8?
Did it work?
Here's a link for it if you want to try it.

No I haven't tried IE8. I have hesitated to do it on my main computer so I just followed suit on this machine I hope to use for video surveillance.

I guess I have nothing to loose by trying it on this Dell 2400. I'll do it and let you know.

Re: I need an IE7 desk top icon

It did not work. Everything just locked up. I had to pull the plug.

I rebooted and tried again. Same Same. Just a blank internet explore page with a message that the program was not responding. This time I was able to get back to the desktop. Outlook Express does work but my faithful old Windows Update link does not.

Dead in the water. I guess I should just try to uninstall IE8?

Yeah uninstall IE8, It was a shot.

The only suggestions I have from here is use IE7 the way you were. Uninstall IE 7 and use IE6 (this is what our work computers use).

Or do the full install of XP and download SP3. reapply.

If ya lived anywhere near me I would tell you to drop it off.

Re: I need an IE7 desk top icon

Thanks BSP, I'll just have to muddle through it. I did uninstall IE8 and it reverted back to IE7. Outlook express still works but it always says there is no connection when I open it. It makes me hit try again, then it hooks up.

I also lost my volume icon in the start up tray. It shows as a past icon in the taskbar properties but I don't see any way to move it up into 'current' icons. I can tell it to always show, while still in the past column but it does not appear on the startup bar.

When I get more time, (I am off to the Virgin Islands tonight for my Daughter's wedding this weekend) I will grab the Dell OS reload disc and give it a whirl. Years ago I deleted a lot of the garbage that Dell includes on there OS disc. I guess I get to do it again.

Who knows, maybe my FIL clicked something into oblivion as he was always wont to do. He was forever clicking on things with no clue as to what he was doing. (Bless his sweet soul. A kinder man never dwelt amongst us)
