I can't speak of Juno, but feel your pain. My 2-way satellite runs $59+tax. Of all the systems I have checked into, the ones the cable companies seem to be the best mix of $ and speed. But recently these have gone up in price.

My options, due to location, are limited to very old slow phone dial up, or satellite. No tollfree national providers or DSL available.

Oh for a DSL hook-up! Can't get a hard line here, so have to use radio phone. I connect at about 7,200 - 16,800 kbs! Better than nothing, but .... UUUGGGGHHH! I'm not impatient or anything!

All I can say is that my contract with my isp runs out in March of next year and I am switching to cable.

Just 39 bucks a month for unlimited use and connected all the time and suppose to be about 10x faster than dial-up.

Don't know but will wait and see.

snapperbait, direct from the JUNO website; "Juno SpeedBand accelerates certain web page text and graphics when compared to standard dial-up Internet service. Actual results may vary. Some web pages such as secure or encrypted web pages will not be accelerated. Juno SpeedBand is not a broadband service and actual data transmission rates are not faster than standard dial-up Internet service. Transmission of files including, without limitation, streaming audio or video, digital photographs, MP3 or other music files, executable files and other downloads, is not faster using Juno SpeedBand than with standard dial-up service. Juno SpeedBand may not be compatible with proxy based software or services such as content filters or firewalls. Juno SpeedBand is only compatible with Platinum service and specified browsers. Not available for Mac." Doesn't sound like your solution, if you have cable TV service keep bugging them to go to cable internet service.

Re: I need el-cheap-o DSL service...

Spinner_bait Nut, I have cable internet access, downloads are fast, for example before cable I used dial-up, the Windows update site estimated 2 hours and 38 minutes to download some updates, with cable it took less than 3 minutes. But it's not cheap, I pay $45 a month and that's only if I also have cable TV for the TV, otherwise it's $50 a month  and that's not counting the $65 TV access costs. The major advantage is instant access, you're never off line, I use a laptop powered 24/7, just tap the mouse and your on line.

cable is the way to go guys! and you don't have
an extra phone line to worry about ($20-25/mo)
plus, it's only an extra $5/mo to add additional
accounts! buy a decent hub or router and you can
network your whole house. otherwise you gotta
rent the hub from cable co., forever....

PS. don't use the AOL version (pop-up hell)
try this Bart; Lavasoft Ad-Aware. it searches for
and removes all the "spy" software on your puter.

I have a cable modem and love it. I also have loaded on this computer the Kazaa shareware software. Will the pop-up blocking software still let this work? I have become increasingly frustrated with the ads but I like to get the music and videos.

Something else to think of...

Cable is fast but cable is a shared bandwidth...
If you do a lot of downloading or someone else in your neighborhood does a lot, it can effect your connection and slow you down...

DSL is a dedicated line just for you, you are not sharing the bandwidth with your neighbors...

DSL and Cable Pros and Cons

DSL

Pros

Always on.
Far faster than 56-kbps dial-up modem.
Better security than cable.

Cons

Setup can be difficult.
Performance depends on location.
--------------------------------------------------

Cable Modem

Pros

For business users, higher speeds get pricey.
More widespread than DSL.
Potentially faster than DSL.

Cons

Price break if you get cable TV service, too.
Less secure than DSL.
Line shared with others in neighborhood; speeds vary accordingly.

Tallman

Re: I need el-cheap-o DSL service...

is there also a "line charge" with DSL?
like a reg. telephone line costs $20-25/mo....
want security? get a router with built in firewall.
not fort knox, but decent protection for the $.
this stuff is gettin pretty cheap SBN.
do a search on ebay for cable modems, might be
cheaper to buy one and not pay rent to cable co.
in the long run.

one other advantage of internet cable, with a WiFi wireless router you can share the cable access with a friendly discrete neighbor and have him pay half your access fee, ;) question; can you have multiple computers share one DSL access without additional fees?

Re: I need el-cheap-o DSL service...

I signed-up for Sprint DSL (fast-connect) Friday, and last night when I tried too hook up what they sent me, I cancelled . I kept the network cards they told me I needed, but sent the DSL modem back. After all that, they wanted an additional 145 buks for something called a "router"..I told them I was told everything I needed was would be in the shipment. It was not. I called tech support, and they said I needed one. I told them I had an old Black&Decker router in the garage, but didn't think I had a bit that would fit that overgrown phone jack in the thing.
Oh well, I'll just keep creepin along the internet until they outlaw us twisted pair dial up folks.

Re: I need el-cheap-o DSL service...

A router is used to connect multiple computers through one dsl/cable modem. The dsl modem that i got through verizon came with everything that i needed. if you didnt have the network cards, it installs using USB port. In reality there are multiple ways to connect more than one computer to a dsl/cable modem. the real problem is that "tech support" is usually any norm person reading from a script. All they do is search their database for your problem and solve it that way. As you might be able to tell, i can't stand them. better off searching the net to find the answers to your problems. by the way you can pick up routers at any electronic stores for under $60.

Shawn
