Re: I need feedback on Hill props

I didn't think real names were to be on here!!!

Interesting to me that VOLVO showed no single prop drives at Miami, 2010.

Chad Hill was 19 and racing for Arcadian Motor Sports in Formula One when the REAL ARCADIAN STAR was killed in Washington, NC, 1997.

I'll be 66 in April......I really never claimed to know much about props, try this one, try that one, when you get a good one FOR YOUR BOAT keep it.

Back to dual props, Chad made me a CUSTOM rear prop for my 27 foot Rayson Craft witha 502, that "AFTER BURNER PROP" gave me 10 MPH....Some of the speed came from my ability to trim the engine up without blowing the rear prop, as he mad the rear prop four blades with 15 inch diameter.

This site here is great, I want to keep it that way!!!

I feel like Will Rogers sometimes, AS I REALLY NEVER MET A PERSON I DIDN'T LIKE. It is nice to meet you, H.W. Slater.

An increase of 10 MPH for a boat that size is exceptional to say the least, and I think it is a great idea to add a 4 blade for the rear prop as well. And I definitely agree with you there is no other site like this on the web, it is the best.

Re: I need feedback on Hill props

Arcadianstar, good to have you on board.
Sounds like you've covered a lot of country and water in your lifetime.
I noticed above you were wondering about "my" qualifications...well, I've been testing props for Merc, Solas, Powertech, MWC and 1 manufacturer that wishes to remain silent at this time.
I also grew-up around the formula 1's-McCunes Racing out of Loveland, CO. I can see I don't cover the country you do, but I did run some APBA for a short time in Kneel-down...and found I'm not near as young and fearless as I once was.
My testing has been as an Independant, comparison-type in nature with very un-biased info. I test props on 6 boats right now that are targeted to the majority of the public. I do not run anything for tunnels, Hydros, etc.
I do have some very good data on some of the more common (read not the fastest) Bassboats, 18-24ft deep-V outboard, 17-26ft inboard (I/O).
I Have some great contacts in this industry that helped me get started years ago that also have some very impressive racing careers in the past.
No, Likely I don't have the experience you have, but Good data for the applications I target is key to me. I have the proper equipment to run the designs I do in a manner that shows consistancy.
How this fits into qualifications is in the Data the Manufacturer is looking for, and I don't think I've contributed anything but honest results that has kept me in a position to be asked year after year for help testing props and set-ups.
Good to have you here and I hope to see your input continue....we love to have experience on this site, and all I can say is Welcome to Iboats!

Re: I need feedback on Hill props

Keeny, Way cool. McCunes. The whole McCune Family story would make a great book.

I may have come in "BLASTING" but meant no harm. Seems this iBoat Props secetion has more questions than answers.

Small world, really!

On my web site www.boatracingfacts.com do a search, but the McCune's are listed.

What seems the hardest for me, right now is making a prop run withn the RPM range....speed is one thing, PRM is another ..

We've been testing Volvo Dual props, 2.4 MPH faster at 3,000 but same speed, plus minus 1-2 at top at 400 RPM down. I know we need the same RPM with these computers/rev limiters...

I the old days, we just wanted to go fast. Now days, with some diesels, 100 RPM's can void a warranty...

I might add: Signature Propellers is very PROUD that they are now offered through iBoats.

ADD: I must say that I thought you, Walleyehed and hwsiii, were "HOUSE MEN" for iBoats and maybe Solas, but I've changed my mind, and believe you just like boats and like myself, enjoy helping people with prop problems.

Hey, we're in this for fun, right???

Re: I need feedback on Hill props

FWIW the 4th prop I got for my Carlson/Johnson was from Ron on his eBay store. It is a OMC SST in 13.5x17. The auction was pretty straight forward. Shipping USPS from Cali-Mighigan was about a week. I thought I was getting a used prop. It was very well priced so what I was expecting and what I received were two very different things.

The prop I got looks like it was blueprinted. It is mirror polished. The leading edges are thinned. It is a good deal thinner than my 13x19 SST. It is almost too nice to stick in the water.

First time I took my Carlson out with the -17P I experianced something I never expected and only experianced in a "true ski boat". Incredible acceleration. Once I was on plane I could drop the hammer and shoot from 20 to 40 like some one was running into the back of my boat with a Mack Truck. It is incredible. All the grip I could ever want.

This is before my induction upgrade but I was running 46.5 @ nearly 6000 RPM with just me in my boat. So yes that is not nearly enough pitch for me but my intended purpose is to tow with this prop so I am confident that it will live up to expectations.

So am I happy with it. Oh ya. Very happy. And if you knew what I paid for it you would probably cry.

Re: I need feedback on Hill props

Just a note to people looking for stainless steel propellers. I bought a Signature 5 Blade from Hill Marine for my 4.3 litre Mercruiser Alpha One. I was really happy with the price (about $500) and was initially happy with the performance (plained very fast) but the prop sets up a really bad vibration. It's much worse than my beat up old Mercury aluminum prop.

I've been trying for about a month and a half to get them to send me a new one but they still haven't rectified the problem. I've been more than patient, but they are just dragging their feet. I WOULD NOT recommend buying a prop from these guys. The price seems good, but you've got to consider after market service too. I've lost my boating season because of this prop! I ordered it July 2, didn't get it until late July, and spend the entire month of August waiting for a replacement. We have a short season up here, so my boat is already out of the water (too cold for boating in September this year).

Buyer beware I guess.

Re: I need feedback on Hill props

I purchased a 4 blade 21p signature Hill prop and replaced the stock 19p 3 blade aluminum on a 3.0 17' glastron. Top speed was really close between the two, holeshot and cornering was hands down 4 blade. I was happy with the prop

Atokarchik, did you ever get the problem rectified? I need to reprop and am considering a Hill Marine 5 Blade Signature. Service is important to me.

Atokarchik has 2 posts, both are negative towards Hill Marine. I guess he has an axe to grind, but some might call it trolling too.

Give Hill Marine a call, they will get you fixed up.

Re: I need feedback on Hill props

Well, I sent a few emails with questions to Hill and they seemed to have taken a long time to respond. I was wondering if that was reflective of the service I should expect if I bought a prop.

Hill Marine...They do offer some high priced prop's...Yet very few post positive results. I am not being negative..just a factual observation.

Call them. Almost every prop shop I know gets flooded with emails.

Actually those are cheap props compared to brands like Hydromotive & Mercury. Go to a performance boat site, you'll see that a lot of folks use them with good results.

Re: I need feedback on Hill props

I happen to know first hand the quality of the signature duoprops. They look good, fit the DPS drive, but thats as far as it goes. The stock volvo front and rear nuts have to be machined to remove the taper as the signature props require a flat faced nut for both the front and rear wheels. The first two (2) sets, yes I am running twin 5.7 GXI volvo gassers, had .125-.187 of blade run-out to the blade edges. The splines were not broached square. Contacted Chad personally and sent them back. At least a dozen calls and numerous emails, 6 weeks later I decide to drive to the Hill facility myself to pick up the props. One set was replaced because the hubs were so bad he could not repair and the other set was untouched. Re-installed both sets and ran the boat. Port motor with the new set reached a max WOT of 3000 r.p.m.'s the starboard motor ran to volvo's specs., 5200 WOT. Swopped the prop sets and the same issue but reversed. Emailed Chad 8 days ago with no response. Tomorrow, I will have in my hands 2 sets of volvo penta F4's and will be happy as hell to get those pieces of crap off my boat. Hill Marine will gladly take your money, but when it comes to customer service, well, your a bit in trouble. I will be tossing these wheels in the scrap barrel here at my shop. Close to a 2K lesson learned!
