Re: i need flooring help now

Ok...I'm new at this also and don't have tons of cash to toss around. My boat, 19' bayliner I also tour the floor up. I checked into and asked tons of questions about plywood. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=334605

The standard pressure treated plywood at Lowes will not work. It's already wet and when it dries it will warp possibly breaking the fiberglass. Someone shouted at me and said use AC fir plywood. This is exterior grade plywood and it has the same water proof glue that marine grade plywood has and its water and chemical resistant also. This plywood has some voids but not a lot. Your marine grade plywood is the best if you can afford it.

Since I was covering the plywood up with fiberglass and outdoor carpet, I was told it would be ok being that I do not live by the lake and the boat only sees water when we are skiing and just having family time. If I was to leave the boat in the water, then I would have to use marine grade plywood instead.

The cost difference was halve the marine grade but I'm just one opinion so please ask around and get better ones. Again this is my first project so ask me in two years about that wood.:D

meatball, it would help if you would post pictures so we could have a better idea what to recommend.

If the floor is completely gone, then chances are that everything underneath is too, i.e. stingers, foam, maybe even the transom. You will need to have a really good look at all the substructure.

And to answer your question, the first step is to clear everything out of the boat so you can get at the entire floor. Seats, boxes, carpet, everything. Once all that stuff is gone you can see what shape the floor is really in.

In my case, I had to pull up the floor because the glass had come off the top and had holes in it (plus the hull had a leak under the floor so had to come out for that anyway). Once I had the floor up, I found the foam was soggy. So out came the foam. Once the foam was out, I found the stringer was soft. So out came the stringer. Once the floor, stringer and foam were out I could see the transom was rotten. So out comes the transom. Now there is no wood left in the hull, the hull repairs are done so now new transom, stringers and floor go in (in that order).

How far you want to go with this project really depends on your intended end result, patience, budget, and timeline.

Re: i need flooring help now

AC is interior grade.
ACX is exterior top grade.
CDX is exterior grade that get covered up.

A,C are the face side grades, just like in school A is better C is middle of the road. Looks is the only difference.

X means it was made for exterior use, semi to full exposer to the weather.

CDX is the most cost effective if you going to cover it. if you leave it out for all to see then use ACX.

Re: i need flooring help now

hi.....welcome to i boats......boat floor university :)

as said...there might be more to it than just replacing the deck.

search core sample. and read....read....read.

you cannot just put a nother peice of wood over the old deck.....you will rot the boat with in one or two seasons.....and your boat will need a total rebuild.

best get it now.

a deck by it self can be done in a day or two......but you best be getting your wood now....it has to dry out.....wood from the store is way to wet..( even if it looks and feels dry) to glass in.

post with pics and we can walk you right thru this.

cheers

It looks like you are in for a full rebuild....

Also from the shape of what I can see, I doubt the transom is any good either...

If it were me, I would start by pulling the outboard, and stick it on a stand...

Seperate the top cap from the hull (pull the black bumper out of the aluminum, then drill out the rivets).

Takethe top cap off and set the cap on some saw horses...

Make a few strips of wood that are the width of the hull, and clamp them in place to keep it from flexing and spreading. (You can also use straps that will do the same thing, but they are not as rigid as clamping wood in place temporarily).

Once thats done, finish cleaning out whats inside. After the mess is gone, post a few more pictures of what you got, and we can help you along more.

From the pictures, it appears to have had 3 full length stringers. (Center one was the keel). You will need to construct new ones, lay them, glass them in, etc. to get the height right, you will need to lay a straight edge crosswise across the bottom of the hull, and build your stringers so that they are even across the top...

You will have to decide whether to foam the bottom or not (doesnt look like it was done previously) so structurally you probably dont need it, but for floation its nice to have, its entirely up to you...

But thats some basic stuff to get you started... before you begin, you will want to take measurements of the inside bottom of the boat, to determine your materials needs for plywood, stringers, fiberglass matt, resin, etc.

Hope that helps!

Dude!

When I said 'If the floor is completely gone...', I had no idea. wow

Yup, full rebuild. I wouldn't even take a chance with that transom, you are so close to being able to pull it with the state the rest of the structure is in, I'd just do it on principle.

As Numlaar suggests, pull the cap. It will make the rest of the work so much easier.

Re: i need flooring help now

no big deal.....you are half way there....

but check the transom.....chances are its rotten as well.....so you will have to rip that out too.
if you need to do the transom....do it now....before you add the stringers.

first.......

make sure the hull is supported well....not just on a roller trailer......

you will need to support the bottom of the hull or it will hook on you and you will have to start all over.....

to check straightness of the hull....underneath the boat....use a string line....there should be no daylight between the bow and the transom....in fact....just a wee bit the other way.

ok....the correct order for the boat is ..
put in the stringers.....(glass them in)
then the foam.....
then the deck...(floor)

the tutorial you should use for this job ....is jcsercas pics of work so far.
it is allmost the same boat....with the same things done to it....
another tutorial is the hull extension thread......it is very detailed on every aspect of what you are goin to do.

also read the compleated projects forum.....

but check that transom and post back here.

cheers

Re: i need flooring help now

As far as plywood goes (after spending 12 years in a plywood mill) I can tell you that if you are going to completely glass the wood any A or B grades will work. Do not use CDX. exterior plywood although made with a waterproof glue is usually not suffiencent for floors. There are big knot holes in the center cores. While they are great for sheathng they are not made to be walked on. The voids flex and loosen the glue and you either punch a hole through the core or it delaminates. If you can find it I would use a B grade with at least 5 plys. B grades are normally have few knotholes and those that are there have been plugged (those little footballs) to a clear face. Just as structurally sound as A just not as cosmetic.

Re: i need flooring help now

If the boat was purchased in that condition for cheap.....what an excellent deal! :) There's nothing better than starting with the hull, knowing what you have. Look at all the crap he doesn't have to tear out, and the trash to remove. Do the transom, and them put it together. I'd pay extra for an old hull, if it was gutted like that. Come on...we know what hell it is to tear it all out. I wonder if someone gave up on it after doing the hard work?

As for the 'repair' on the starboard side....I'm not so sure it's a repair. Most tri-hull early 1970's Reinells had a reinforced area that look exactly like that on both sides though. (Right above the trailer rollers.) Usually cored with balsa. Strange to see it on only one side, though.

It's a tri-hull, foam not used for structure, only flotation. Use 2 stringers, 18 inches apart for good support for the floor. Put the flotation in the gunwales, and get fishing.

I was just thinking that very thing.

$500 for 100 HP motor, and a free hull that already has most of the grunt work already done. Great deal in my books.
