I'm starting to look for my first boat. I don't have much to spend and realize there will be some elbow grease involved. Cosmetic fix up I don't mind I just haven't a clue about what to look for "under the hood". I'm handy and can fix just about anything but I don't want what a "weekend project the never ends."

Question: What should I look for and what good Internet resources have you found. What Kind of boat makes a nice family vessel.

Example: I have my eye of a 1994 Sea Rayder that looks nice on the outside and has been well cared for. The interior has sun damage as I would expect. Other than that it "seems" O:K

Should I avoid Jet boats? Do they have higher than normal (What ever normal is.) maintainance? I wouldn't be pulling skiers and I'm not an avid fisherman. And I have no interest in venturing far off shore into the gulf.

:confused: Is asking for a "test drive" normal when seriously considering a used boat?

What about the "extended insurance" plans on the engine components? Does it pay off better than the automobile extended coverage?

What about boaters safety courses? Are they helpful?

Thanks! :D

The test drive on a pre-owned boat is a must, (emphasize must). The test will put every part of the boat through its paces. Look for obvious things that stick out, soft spots, new or out of place items, etc. Ask Ask Ask all the questions you have.

I can second that--a used boat will provide you many weekends with something to do, both on and off water. There's always something to be done and nothing is as easy as it first looks or sounds. And it will dig into your pocket. Not my saying, but seems to be coming true:

B====Break
O====Out
A====Another
T====Thousand

Had a lotta fun tho, and still going. Everyone should own a boat at least once.

I say look for a nice starcraft or cresliner 20 foot boat. Alum would be my first choice its lighter weight and get the outboard model.

Jetboats can be fun for family cruising...our neighbor has a glastron carlson with a 460ci ford (easy and cheap to work on) and berkley jet pump. The boat works great on lakes and any other very calm water. Top end is around 70mph too - gas hog though. :D
