I need help again!

I working on a 59 evinrude 35hp lark and I'm new to outboard motors asw you can tell by my previous posts. I replaced impeller( the old one looked new) but I was getting no water to motor. I started motor in a drum after replacing impeller and motor still getting hot just idling. Shut motor off and removed thermostat housing and no thermostat but dry as a bone. I took foot back off and made sure impeller was installed properly turning clockwise. Looked good. Blew out all water inlet and outlet nothing stopped up. My question is how many copper tubes are in that foot? There are 2 that connect to water pump housing but there is a rubber gromet below water pump that comes from a screened inlet above the prop. It just empties into foot cavity that goes back out of the foot. Is there supposed to be another copper tube from there to motor? It also looks as if the foot possibly has been replaced. It is newer looking than rest of motor but everything bolts up fine. Any advice would be great.

I used to have a 1959 35H.P. johnson and battled for a while on that water issue. Ordered new grommets, that are the rubber boots that the copper tubes fit into, and solved the problem. The best I can come up with is that the grommets were wore out and not allowing pressure to build up for water to travel through engine. They are hard to find but Laings has them for $2.95 apiece. Look on this page http://www.laingsoutboards.com/newpage4.htm towards the bottom under cooling parts. When you go to instal them make sure the little post on the sides of the grommets go into the holes in the outboard. That means there seated properly. Hold on to that web address, that is also the only place I could find a head gasket for that motor.

59lido, you have answered your own question. That lower unit has been replaced with one from around 1968 vintage. Yes there is supposed to be a water inlet tube from the screen to the pump. No way will it work without it. Just can't happen.

Also, there is supposed to be a plastic thermostat housing in the head with a pressure relief valve below it. And a thermostat. It will pump without the thermostat, but not without the plastic housing and pressure valve.

Ebay my friend, if you can't find it now keep looking and it will turn up.
I got a complete lower unit WITH a prop for my Evinrude 50 for 180 bucks, I almost felt bad for getting it so cheap, it has worked flawlessly for 3 years now.
Just make sure whoever you deal with has good feedback, I have been on there for years and not had any problems.

i may not understand exactly what you mean but you might be able to just buy a copper tude and make the connection from the screened inlet to the pump intake. in order for the motor to come up to temp you need the pressure valve and of course the t-stat in place. the t-stat, when it's closed, forces the water through the pressure valve back to the water pump which pumps it back through the water jacket to pick up more heat, and when the temp reches 143 degrees the t-stat opens and the pressure valve closes because the water has a path of less resistance through the t-stat. you will know when its at operating temp because you will see the spray out the exhuast relief on the back of the leg. you should be able to take the t-stat housing cover off and start the motor and have a good fountain of water out the housing

You certainly don't need a whole lower unit just because the water tube is missing. The water tube is part number 312611, the rubber grommet at the lower end is 312610, the rubber grommet at the upper end is 304026. Get all this stuff from a dealer.

The water tube is way overpriced though. Just get a piece of 1/2" OD soft copper (refrigeration) tubing from the hardware store. You may have to bend it a tad to make it fit.

I have used copper tubing before and is a lot cheaper. There are a few bends in that so if you are not good at bending pipe you might check the dealer.

The foot has 2 places for water tubes. One goes from the screened opening which has no tube in it. The other gose from the water pump to an outlet that goes to a hole behind the prop and it has a tube that connects the water pump to the outlet.

Huh? Say what? There are two tubes, one for the water to go up to the powerhead, and one for water to return to the pump when the thermostat is in recirculation mode. (Arrows)

Late models have an inlet tube between the pump and water intake which is the screen on the leading edge of the underwater exhaust. (indicated by the third arrow, but this is not that kind of pump housing)
