I need help identifying this motor

Hello, I am not only new to this forum, I am only here to get information and perhaps sell this motor if someone wants to buy it.


Here's what happened. I live in Colorado Springs CO. We, some friends of mine, were helping to put up an awning at out Christian school. Over the fence is a storage unit business. While we are working, this guy calls over and asks if anyone is interested in this motor (his purpose was to get our help to move it regardless).

Well, long story short I ended up with the motor. It seems to be complete except for the front nameplate cowling. I have the engine cowling. I didn't realize the part was missing or I would have looked around for it inside the storage unit (they were just throwing things out because of non payment).

Anyway, I sell things on Ebay and Craigslist.

I don't know what year this is. From my research so far today, I think I am close to calling this a 1961 Mercury Merc 800 80. But as you see I am not sure. There is no "plate" on it anywhere. The # on the engine block is for a '61.

Is it something I said? 72 unique views and no one knows what this motor is? I really don't want to just scrap it, it looks to be in nice condition. But I am not a boater or even a fisherman. The only "lakes" that they have here are ponds to most of you.

I will give the website a couple days, then I guess if I don't hear anything I will dump it. too bad, I thought I had found the "answer" when I found your forum... maybe not .... we'll see.

Looks like an early 1960s Merc, maybe an 800 or 1000. The Dynafloat covers have me a little confused (small rectangular covers over the lower motor mounts) as the early 1960s ones were more triangular than rectangular. The raised lettering on the top cowling dates it around 1961 or 1962. Is the tag on the clamp bracket legible? It should have the model number on it, along with the serial number.

Looks like a mid 60's (64-67) 950 or 1000 to me......

I also asked themercguy.com and he emailed me back with this

"This would have to be a mixture of motors. The cylinder block casting number is from a 1960 style direct reversing Merc 800. The leg has the features of a 1964 gear shift engine."

Since you just posted that, then I'm going to say it's a 1960 Merc 800, lol. Not uncommon to have a different year lower unit as several years are usually interchangeable. You'd still say the motor is a "1960" because the power head wins in a dispute. It is in fact very clean from the pictures, so I'd invest a little time and energy into it to try and get it to start. Unless the plan is to tear it down bolt-by-bolt, you'll get a lot more from it running, obviously, than you will as an unknown. Just to be kind, since you're a new guy around here, I'll give you $50.00 and you deliver it to my house.

Well, I don't think I am going to pursue the "exact" identification process anymore. I think I'm close enough to label it with a couple of caveats.

Given the very clean condition of it, minus the "K" cowling on the front and the fact that I have no idea if it is a working motor, what should someone realistically expect to pay for something like this.

I've read where the "inline 6" is a sought after item for collectors. All of the other parts look to be in excellent condition, but I have seen lots of parts on Ebay still sitting there. I am not going to sit on this motor.

Shipping it would cost probably half of what it's worth if it was a runner.

So, what say ye mates? Try and sell it ? Scrap it (sad to do that given it's condition) ..... front yard ornament near the pond?

I'd put it on Craigslist for $200-$300 and see what happens. If no takers there, then parting it out is an option. Forums like John's Old Merc site, where I see you also had a post, are a good starting point, too. The motor has parts value, so I would definitely avoid scrapping it. You'd have to tear it down anyway to get any scrap value...

I'm a trusted and power seller on eBay. I would not touch it at all and sell it just as it is, start low and give it 10 days.

Alls well that ends well.

Put it on Ebay for 10 days at $200...... no takers....

Put it on Craigslist for almost that long and the day I was going to junk it out (some guy wanted to trade some pressure guages for it but I declined) and this guy from about 1.5 hrs south of me calls and ended up trading for a thing that goes bang!! Nice piece too.

He said indeed it was a 1961 that he has one just like it that he needed parts for!! Isn't that cool! I love it when things turn out like that. Both of us quite satisfied. I think he was even more happy with the free throttle control with all the cables that he needed too, all Kief....
