What should I set the points at?Can I get a new dist cap for it? Is there an electronic ignation avalible?

That old merc most likely has the old Fairbanks Morse ignition on it. Excellent sysems and work well when properly tuned. I'm willing to bet that Sea-Way Marine can be of help with your tune up parts. The 850's I believe were inline sixes in '62 and it's highly unlikely electronic ignitions are adaptable to it. I could be wrong though. Maybe some genius came up with something.

Point gap 90*dwell dist.cap make-own--------spark plug gap-0.025 as far as parts i do not know.i hope this helps good luck

Thanks for the help guys, got the engine running good in a barrel yesterday,I have video of it too, Parts are hard to find for the beast,But I found them.Now I guess it's off to the lake to see how she does,under load..When it stops raining

I have a '63 Merc 850. I am lucky to live only a few miles from Seaway Marine (www.seawaymarine.com). They have everything you need. Old Mercs (www.oldmercs.com) also has a lot of good stuff.

You can get a distributor but they're about $175 from Seaway and more like $240 everywhere else I've seen. Unless the old one is trashed, just make it work as best you can.

Another little piece of advice, don't buy the factory fuel hoses - unless you're wealthy and all about spending money. Get the fittings at a hardware or good auto parts store and use bulk-hose/hose claps. The factory ones were not meant to be used with Ethanol-containing gas. Most bulk hose wasn't either but at least it will only cost you $5 to replace every year, rather than $20-$30 per hose (I think there are 6 of them!...)

By the way MY that thing is clean! Very pretty.
