Hey guys, I need to pick your brains here if I may. I am a lifelong boater (38yrs), and have owned several boats, but never a Volvo. I am going tomorrow to look at one, and I need some pointers...

It is a 1979 bayliner nisqually, with an AQ255B, and what I assume is a 280 drive. Now I know engines very well, so the 350 is no problem, but I have no experience with Volvo drives. So what do I look for, besides leaks, bent propshaft, and signs of poor maintenance? Are there particular items that I should pay close attention to? Educate me please!!

That's about all you can look for. When you run the engine, listen to the flywheel housing for a growling sound, similar to a gimbal bearing in your Mercruiser. Problem is, if there is water in the bellows, it may be in the flywheel cover bearings (Sometimes referred to as PDS Primary Drive Shaft bearings) usually requires an engine pull to replace. In many cases the seals and bearing is shot and water gets into the flywheel area and the starter. Just something to keep in mind.

Thanks Don, I appreciate the tip. I am comfortable with a Merc like an old shoe, but am not familiar with this drive. Looks like I may have to learn..... wonder how long I can make it before Rick starts talking me into the DP conversion..... :)
