I have just recently aquired an older Bayliner Caprice. It has no engine on it but does have the outdrive. It is a OMC cobra. I have tried to find some information on the motor and all that is supposed to go into it without much luck. I have gotten it takes a 3.0L engine..but I have not had much experience in i/o motors..just outboards. are there any engines that can be interchanged? could I take any car engine and get the appropraite engine to outdrive changeover? I need some tech help PLEASE! I apprechiate any help I can get!

What year boat ?

You would do great to get a marine 3.0 omc motor fresh water used complete, and just drop it in.

Thats what i would do.

Just came across your post - yikes! No, you should not ( won't say can't ) replace a marine engine with a drop in car unit. There are just so many differences between the two. If a properly marinized car motor was placed in a boat then the safety issues would be resolved. However I wouldn't give it one season of running before it's toast. Think of it this way: when was the last time you took you car out on the interstate and pushed the pedal to the metal for let's say - four or five hours? Not gonna' last too long is it?
Marine motors have the ability ( due to cam structure among others ) to maintain this high RPM level and still be in one piece after the day.
There really is a lot more to a marine motor than meets the eye. That is one reason why their price is so high.
As far as your OMC drive is concerned here is a little reading for you if you want :http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/
