I need to buy a CB Radio!

I'm a bit ashamed that as a truck driver, I do not know everything about CD radios, other than how to use them.

I have an assigned truck now, but I need to supply my own radio.

My past experience is only with the cheapest Cobras, worn out Unidens and a totally worthless, cheap Midland. Not very impressed.

I'm thinking about a Galaxy, as they are supposed to be pretty good.

Don't really need a "big radio", just a good one, in the $90 - $150 range.

Thanks for any input.

I agree with Jim. I'd like to add that you want to find a shop with a SWR meter so you can trim your antanna's.

Re: I need to buy a CB Radio!

Boy, this brings back memories......about 5 years ago I was contacted by Coppers.com to do a how-to article on modifying a Voyage 9000 10 meter radio for the NPC-RC modification (Negative Peak Conversion-Reduced Carrier). It's not too hard to modify the radio following the text and pics. Having some electronics background really helps along with standard soldering skills can get the job done. I just checked and the article is still on their site.

Basically the mod is explained on this site: http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/cbdoctor/npcrc.html

A good Galaxy, a Texas Star DX-667, and a couple good Wilson antennas all set up and adjusted right.......Talk about walkin the dog.

driving about 25 yrs. If you need it just to talk ,get directions , or just to have one ...Uniden PC76XL . it's made with the old cobra 29 LTD chassis before china bought out cobra . 18 ft.coax ,cheap 4ft. Francis ant. is all you need all for about $150.00 give or take, and if you want a peak n tweak , will be a couple more bucks . that's all new stuff , might get a deal on used stuff.
P.S. COBRA IS JUNK !!!

Can't give you advice on a brand of CB but don't over look what these guys are saying about antenna's.
A radio station is only as good as the antenna system it's connected to.

The co-phased antenna system RP describes works well for going up and down highways
It gives you a egg shaped lobe to the front and back so you can talk and hear a little farther in both directions.

If I were a long haul trucker thats what I would use. (for CB)

If your only going for a simple (one antenna) set up.
And you want to talk to other truckers up and down the road.

Like using a magnet mount.
If you can find one try a 1/2 wave. The RF take off angle is lower and you can talk farther using ground waves.

Most mobile antenna's are 5/8 wave. Kind of the best of both worlds. Works well for point to point and when the band is open (skip) you can still have some fun working (QRP) HF DX
World Wide.

Bottom line is that if you don't have the equipment (a simple swr meter) or desire to do it yourself.
Pay a few bucks to have the local CB truck stop guys to set it up for you.
Most of them are very good. :)
Best money you will ever spend radio wise.

Poor quality CB with good antenna will preform as well or better than a Good quality CB with a poor antenna.

Put a good CB with a Good Antenna
Now your talking about a Great QRP (low power) HF station.
Which is why I quoted Reel Poor :)

KB0J3365 figure that call out! ;)
Before that at 11 years old a greymark three tube am transmitter :) but legal! :)

Icom 737 10-100 watts bare foot
KW TS-520 bare foot 4 or 5 to 280 PEP SSB

Sounds like you have a neat station.

To me Radio is MAGIC!

Re: I need to buy a CB Radio!

Link: KBOJ3365 looks like an old cb license # mine was KTH0755
and your 100% correct a radio is only as good as the antenna,
I do agree on the cobra 29 as a good choice for a cb. but if I needed a cb only I would buy an older cobra 148 the audio curciut in those radios were great, but there are alot of good radios out now but you really need to spend about 200 bucks on one.........
Link........I collect old Ham radios, CB's and astatic mic's I dont know how many I have...I'll have to get you some pic's sometime...........
ps.....wilson 1000 with an extented base is the best antenna for mirror mount installation, 50 ohm coax for single, 75 ohm for dauls........

KBU1279....Never did the ham bit just the AM and SSB.

Ever seen one of these. Put that thru a Moon-Raker 6 with a back door at 128 ft boom hight. Nuff said. :^

Yea, I traded an old (origional) President Washington with a Digi-Scan (and a few other odds and ends) for a Galaxy Saturn. Never looked back. Also ran the Saturn mobile with the 667 in the truck. 8)
