i am kind of new to the I/O'S have worked on plenty of outboards -- i just picked up 79 century 20' with a pretty badley cracked block (both sides) from ice i would presume -- from what year to what year can i replace this with little as possible ? also can i use a higher hp 6cyl ? 190hp they seem to be more available for some reason any help would be great thank you :)

We need to know what the current "cracked" block is. The outdrive you have is likely geared for a V8, going to a V6 might require a different outdrive ratio. You don't want to drop down to a V6 anyway.

cracks are beyond repair i believe cast is pushed out in a circle or horse shoe about 4" diameter so i guess i will look for a good 228

Easiest solution is to replace with another first generation 305 - or even 350. Keep it to an older two piece rear main. Be sure to check the condition of the manifolds and risers as well.

The 228 was 4bbl Chevy 305 I believe. I would replace it with a 350 since it's almost a direct swap, parts-wise, and you'l get another 30-40HP in the process.

If you have good accessories that you can transfer over, then a universal crate engine is a good deal. You can transfer your marine externals and are good to go. I believe these crate engines even already have brass core plugs and composite head gaskets - but you can check. You can get them various sites for around $1,500. Here's an example.

As mentioned above - get another engine with a two piece rear main - basically anything before 1985.
