Im adding a second battery to my boat and a battery selector switch and cant decide how to hook it up. My boat is a 20ft Bayliner capri with a 5.7L in it. My Pos battery cable runs to the starter, and The output wire from the alternator goes straight to the starter, and theres 2 other wires on the starter that send power to the rest of the boat. Should I just wire the batteries straight to the selector switch, and then run the ALT to the 3rd post on the selector with another battery cable coming off the same post as the ALT, going to the starter?

Does not sound quite right . . . usually, you are just changing the way the main battery lead gets to the starter and nothing changes about how the alternator lead is hooked up, etc

Google "Perko Battery switch schematic" images and you will get some pictures of typical installations.

Yeah I thought more about it and decided to leave everything on the boat the same and run the 2 battery cables to the selector switch and have 1 battery going out from the common post on the switch to the starter

Thanks
