Mercruiser's Vazer has (had?) newer technology, 1.6L 100HP I/O that was released right when the economy was faltering. It didn't go very far..... (probably because nobody wants a 100HP I/O)

GM is good at using engines for a long time and making them interchangable.. The SBC ran from '55-'02 in production vehicles, and the LS engines were introduced in 1997 and production is still going strong.

I think the only answer that GM/Merc/Volvo could have put out for the 3.0L replacement was the Atlas series of engines, and it simply did not happen in time, tho if production stayed strong, it may have.

with props becoming old tech maybe we will not see a engine change until the drive system changes
