Hey folks, brand new to this and did check out the forum but need some direction. I have an 83 Bayliner Bowrider with a 130 Volvo Penta I/O. Just replaced the alternator and the battery. I have juice. Horn and all the gauges and electrics work but boat motor will not tun over, not even a click. Am I doing something wrong? Does shifter have to be in neutral? Where is Neutral? Does the outdrive need to be in a down and locked postion? I am ignorant...totally so please help! If someone would care to walk me thru some checks I would love a phone call as I was supposed to pick my son up to take him boating this AM. Perhaps it is a quick easy fix..508-479-0190...thanks, Kevin

You are not going boating today. Not because you have a major problem, it's because you don't know your boat or boating very well yet. There is no power to the starter itself, you can listen to the radio all day and still not start the motor without the proper voltage and amperage at the starter when it is demanded.

To be honest, you need to have someone show you how to operate the boat. First thing to do is take the boat to your local Volvo dealer and have him go over how all the different items operate. The 130's don't have chokes and can be a bit of a bear to get started if you don't know how, or try to start it like an EFI engine.
You aren't ignorant about it, you are just unknowing at present. Not finding out how to operate the systems or the boat before you hit the water is ignorant.

Agreed, having the boat not provide juice to the starting system is a ligitimate topic and is no doubt covered in many posts however your questions about how to start the boat provided everything is working. Does it have to be in neutral, where is nuetral, what doed the trim need to be set at. Those are all questions that you should already have answers to. Do as Don suggested and speak to your Volvo Service department before you are out on the water with your son and the engine wont start. There are plenty of days left in boating season this year, do not jump into something without knowing the proper opperating proceedures.

I agree with the others, you really need to learn some of the basics of your boat. Please don't just go put it in the water and wish for a good time even if it starts. For the sake of yourself, your family, and others around you. Please take the time and learn, it will help provide a much more enjoyable summer.

Total tangent, but w.t.h:
Actually, unknowing is pretty much the definition of ignorant (it's at least a synonym).

From Webster's dictionary:
Main Entry: ig·no·rant
Pronunciation: 'ig-n(&-)r&nt
Function: adjective
1 a : destitute of knowledge or education <an ignorant society>; also : lacking knowledge or comprehension of the thing specified <parents ignorant of modern mathematics> b : resulting from or showing lack of knowledge or intelligence <ignorant errors>
2 : UNAWARE, UNINFORMED

Not finding out how to operate the systems or the boat before he hits the water would be stupid. But the word ignorant seems to have picked up a negative connotation in common usage for many people.

Isn't it weird how that can happen? Anyone else remember the flap a government official caused when they used the word 'niggardly' (it means " grudgingly mean about spending or granting")? I think they almost got fired because someone who didn't know the meaning of the word took offense...
