I/O starter problems

I have a 2000 four winns 180, 4.3 volvo penta GL 190 hp. Two years ago I forgot the plug and got a good amount of water in the bilge. A few weeks and after working fine for a few trips my boat wouldn't start. I took it to the dealer and was charged nearly $300 for a new starter and installation etc. My father in law forgot the plug a few weeks ago and I have starter problems again. I removed the starter drained the rusty water and cleaned it. After replacing the fuse and re-installing it starts. Will this starter work again in the spring? Or should I have replaced it? Also The starter was completely covered in a thick black paint that matched my engine. (Wiring too) Do the replacements come with the coat of paint? OR Did my dealer charge me for a replaceement when all he did was dry out my original starter.

Most rebuilders paint the starters when they are done rebuilding them.. that's normal.<br /><br />If everything looked new in there when you took it apart I would say you'd be in good shape for next year as long as you coated it all with oil then wiped it dry prior to putting it back together.<br /><br />If you ever have to bring your boat in for a starter check, (and possible replacement) again.. take a punch and hammer a couple of small dots in the housing in order to determine if you get the same exact starter back, in the event they tell you they gave you a brand new one.

I had my starter rebuilt, it was just a ball of rust, cost $70, now works and looks like new. If you are looking for peace of mind, or if it gives you any problems, I would have it rebuilt.
