I picked up a couple of gallons of Vinyl Ester fairing compound on the way to CT . . . Feels pretty light. I might have gotten a 5 gallon pail, but I hoping what I got will do.

Ondarvr told me that if I go with VE fairing, then I can gelcoat. If I went with epoxy fairing, then it would need to be paint (not gelcoat).

I'd imagine a VE based filler/fairing material is easier to work with other than a shorter working time. Are the higher end gelcoats poly or vinyl based? Seem to recall them being VE.

There is allegedly an adhesion promoter for putting gel over epoxy... I've never used it nor would I be willing to be a beta tester for it. Sounds like one more step in a process that can just be avoided by using compatible materials...

I think the gelcoat I have is poly-based. Not sure, but probably.

I got my VE fairing compound (LBI Composites #940), good for below the waterline applications. My goal is to finish off the extension bracket this week and begin working on the boat. There are a few more layers of glass to put on the transom (1708, 1808, 1708), then it should be as specified in the design.

I made a drawing for the re-power shop to install the engines. It looks like when all is done with the transom, the height above the planing surface will be about 31". It should give me 1" of engine 'height', which will be my starting point for engine height adjustments.

Transom is done for fiberglassing. I got up early and did the final 2 layers of glass 1808 & 1708 . . . The transom is just under 2" thick with some variation (+/- 0.05").

I need to make the engine mounting area flat, as it is not flat enough. The plan is to use the pieces of 1" Coosa that I cut out from the transom to make the fiberglass inserts as a flat surface and will mix up some fiberglass filler. I'm coating the pieces with PVA to make them non-stick. Then, I'll goop-up the transom area with the filler and clamp the Coosa pieces in place to form a flat surface as the filler cures.

Probably will throw a layer of plastic sheeting over them as well, so no chance of them sticking to the filler.

you could have used a piece of starboard. because short of one specialty solvent based glue, not a thing sticks to starboard.

Goop is the new addition to the wee. All those measurements, cad drawings, different colored lines and such and now we are adding goop to the build. Being who I am, goop is better understood in my brain.
