I have a 1995 20 maxum with a 4.3 literlx with the alpha drive. the hydraulic cylinders that raise and lower the drive were frozen in the up position. I took them off and freed them up. One of the cylinder housings has some scratches in it that you can catch a fingernail on. can I use emery cloth to smooth them out and then put in a new seal kit? Also one of the stainless flex hose fittings would not come out of the cylinder housing. I had to drill it out. Do you know if the permatex thread repair material would work with this? It is rated for 128foot pounds of torque. Im not sure what kind of pressure will be on the fitting while running. Or is there a better way to fix the threads? Thanks Shawn PS I am new to boating but I am mechanically inclined and am willing to learn

Shawn, you don't have much to lose at this point! Depending on how deep those scratches are, the emery cloth may or may not work. Did you already rip the seals with the scraches? If not, try smoothing them out and see what happens.

I don't know much about the permatex stuff, but again, what do you have to lose except a couple dollars trying it? If that doesn't work, you could try a heli-coil. I have had success with them before, never tried a cylinder though.

Welcome to iboats!

There is a common brass fitting (dont remember the size 1/4 inch male?), tappered thread male, flare fitting female, that will usually fit a stripped out thread hole in the ram. You should be able to pick one up at your local hardware store. I would give this a try first.

Re: I/O tilt/trim cylinders

thanks for all the suggestions. I did get a 1/8 by 27 tap and a letter r drill bit size. I drilled out the hole and then tapped it. I then got a brass 1/8 male end with a 3/16 female end fitting made for brake lines. I put teflon tape on the threads and they went right in and tightened down. I did use emery cloth on the cylinder and smoothed out the scratch. I didnt take off much material. the cylinders had been in the up position for 2 years(brother in law) they had water mixed with the oil. Even though the o rings looked good I think the seal needs to be replaced. What do you think? Thanks for the help shawn
