Why don't you try to take your 140 horse inboard off the boat and replace it with a ten so you can fish that lake where only ten horse is allowed because it a reservoir.Or maybe a twenty so you can fish Quabbin in Massachussets.
In other words, outboards may be more expensive, but you gain a lot more versatility.

The only outboard I would own is new (unless you are real good out outboard repair,Im not and the tools, you know that used means beat on)and new is big bucks. Just got done building the best motor I have ever built (new heads, intake, pistons, everything resurfaced and balanced....)dynoed at 4800rpm to have 310hp and still only spent $2800.00. Also you can get most parts at a local car parts store.
There is one good thing about a outboard "space".

This is more of a question than a comment. Seems that a powerhead is really equivalent to a whole motor in terms of cars. No tranny, no output in car motors either. If this is so, then wouldn't the powerhead (engine) on an i/o be much cheaper for the horsepower and easier to work on?

Comment: The lower unit, upper unit, etc may not be so easy to work on and from what I've seen, seem to on the costly side as well.

Can someone comment on my comment? :D

thank you
Billy Bob

I Have owned both, and there is good things and bad about both. Inboard or IO burns way less fuel, are much quieter, and are much easier to work on with little mechanical experience. They also tend to last much longer….Outboards are much lighter and will give you higher speed with less hp(I think that is the only advantage). Originally outboards were much cheaper than IO’s but this is not the case anymore….we are now in an age where an outboard can cost over 20 grand !!!!! It all comes down to what you want, The next boat I get will have an IO and you can be sure of it !!!!!!

If you do a search you will find a lengthy debate that I started awhile back. Alway's owned outboards and just got my first I/O last season. Mercruiser Magnum 350 with alpha one drive. I love it; about the only complaint is that you can run an outboard into the colder season because of the ease of draining it, although the new I/o's have easy drain setups.
