Hey I took on rebuilding this engine a few months ago just to see if I could do marine engine maintenance. There was a time I got a little frustrated and was about to let a true mechanic take it on but (thanks to iboats) I stuck with it. This 84 90hp inline six had a detonated piston and a damaged cylinder (it would start but was running way to rough). I stripped the power head off the transom, opened the case and pulled out the crank. I sent the block to a machinist who bored the cylinders for me. That was the only outside help I needed. I ordered all of the pistons, bearings, gaskets, carbs and so on. I sat down and carefully put it back together. From my experience with fixing dirt bikes and Harleys I didn’t have too much trouble.
After putting it back on the boat and starting it for the first time I let it break in for a few days. I took it out on the water and that’s when I guess the original symptoms showed up. The engine was bogging (like it would run fine for a minute and then run poorly for 5 minutes). So I took it home, talked to you guys and figured out that it was the stator. Ordered that and installed it and the engine runs like new!!! I can tow a water skier with 3 passengers aboard and two tool boxes and fuel tanks at 35 MPH (GPS clocked land speed).

It’s an awesome engine!!! And good on fuel too.

now I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging but I’m only 22 years old and a lot of people say that any good two stroke marine mechanic should be at least 40. I disagree. I also don’t want to jinks anything but I think that these engines are easier to rebuild then some cars, bikes or even tractors. My engine is running solid, and has been for almost 5 days worth of boating now. Its easy stuff to do, and if I could do it my first time I'm sure almost any one could.

Where did you find carbs for that motor? you are using wmk-39??
I also found out my troubles with my motor was the stator.
Mine would not go over 2000 rpm.... I called a merc dealer and spoke to a tech. told him I suspected the switch box or stator but I had no way of testing it. He told me I was on the wrong track that it was definetly fuel.... So I tore the carbs apart.....poured the gas out into a glass jar to see if there was anything in the bowls.... nope.... So, I put them back on after replacing float and gaskets... no change. I called him again... He says "tear em down again...you didnt do it right"...... The boat sits for a year... I am going crazy and find this forum. more than one person had the same problem and they all had to replace the stator. I buy a digital meter and test the stator and trigger..... stator is fried..... New one is on the way... should be here friday.....

Thanks Tim.

And hey bbarrons,
I’m sure that’s what’s up with ur engine. Although if it is something sticking in your carb you can verify it by shining a little but bright flashlight into the mouth of the carb. I did that at night and could see the entire vapor trail leaving the jets and entering the reeds. But if its the stator just wait until you fire it up, (just like in my situation) you will hear a big difference in the idle as its a lot cleaner. And if you manually open the throttle cam, that thing should rev up like a Ferrari!!! But hey best of luck to ya.

good job blue . I did the same at 45 .. i took my time .put my 1974 merc 1150 and rebuilt the whole thing .while off durring a dissability . bored it over .030 wisco pistons .all bearings and seals each aspect . except the lower unit . now that is my project . but to share some specs for fun once i got that timming right .18 foot tri hull i worked hard tuning it for increases in performance 19 pitch prop gps says 44 mph @ 5400 rpm depending on how i set the trim i use a wing on my lower end too . and it pulls a 200 pound skier right out of the water but right now i got the lower end apart .. and working on . it got lots wrong that was never right but i will tackel that

2.4L ?

99 cubic inches would be about 1.6L

Congrats deep blue. Good job. When you are 40 you'll look back and say gee, I did that when I was only 22.
