Hey I took on rebuilding this engine a few months ago just to see if I could do marine engine maintenance. There was a time I got a little frustrated and was about to let a true mechanic take it on but (thanks to iboats) I stuck with it. This 84 90hp inline six had a detonated piston and a damaged cylinder (it would start but was running way to rough). I stripped the power head off the transom, opened the case and pulled out the crank. I sent the block to a machinist who bored the cylinders for me. That was the only outside help I needed. I ordered all of the pistons, bearings, gaskets, carbs and so on. I sat down and carefully put it back together. From my experience with fixing dirt bikes and Harleys I didnt have too much trouble.
After putting it back on the boat and starting it for the first time I let it break in for a few days. I took it out on the water and thats when I guess the original symptoms showed up. The engine was bogging (like it would run fine for a minute and then run poorly for 5 minutes). So I took it home, talked to you guys and figured out that it was the stator. Ordered that and installed it and the engine runs like new!!! I can tow a water skier with 3 passengers aboard and two tool boxes and fuel tanks at 35 MPH (GPS clocked land speed).
Its an awesome engine!!! And good on fuel too.
now I dont want to sound like Im bragging but Im only 22 years old and a lot of people say that any good two stroke marine mechanic should be at least 40. I disagree. I also dont want to jinks anything but I think that these engines are easier to rebuild then some cars, bikes or even tractors. My engine is running solid, and has been for almost 5 days worth of boating now. Its easy stuff to do, and if I could do it my first time I'm sure almost any one could.
