Today I went fishing at a lake about an hour or so from here. Got there at about 6 and was the first boat at the launch. today was the first time my grandpa has been in my new to me boat, so i was kind of hoping everything was going to go smoothly. The boat is a 14ft aluminum alumacraft which has a floor that i put in myself.

We launched and i parked my truck (prolly took a good 10 min, as the lot is across the highway). motor starts perfectly and runs nice and smooth all the way across the lake to where we begin to fish. After we were fishing for about 10 or 15 min i hear the sound of water hitting water coming from underneath the floor at the back of the boat. At first i couldnt figure out where the noise was coming from so i quickly lifted up the floor just in time to see a stream of water shooting into the boat from a hole about the size of a AA battery. The bottom of the boat has a lot of water in it.

At this point im pretty mad because its only 6am and no hardware store is gonna be open and i wont be able to fish anymore......we quiclkly pulled in our lines and got back to the dock as fast as we could and got it back on the trailer. We propped the bow of the boat up on a cooler and let it drain while we brainstormed. Luckily i keep tools in the boat and the truck. In my boat I have about 12 anchor cleats for some reason. one of them had bolts that looked to be the same size as the hole, so we took it off, put the bolt through the hole and went back to fishing.......turned out to be a great day.

The hole btw was in the back were a transducer was mounted by the previous owner...sometime between the last time i used it and today the silicone that had been sealing it broke free. looks like i will be re-siliconing all the repairs on this thing next spring.

see, there's a reason why we don't throw out all that old junk! I have to remind the wife about this all the time - it's not about monetary value, it's about having an old bolt when you need it where you need it!

How was the fishing?

The fishing was good. Got about 20 nice size gills for supper. Even if we had caught nothing, it was a perfect day. 75degrees and not a cloud in the sky and a perfect drifting wind.

I agree with the old junk, saved me today for sure. This boat has an anchor cleat evey 2 feet all the way around and one of those claw style anchor rope holders inbetween each cleat....its insane. figured i could spare one of their bolts to save a day on the lake. im just glad i keep tools with me.

Pony, if your not going to have it welded up, here is a real good use for 3M 5200. It won't come off like any silicone will. It's tougher to begin with and unlike silicone it is made to be used under the water line.
