Hears my current delema. My recent rebuilt 280 penta outdrive(1.61 gears) on my 28' bayliner contessa will not go in forward. I have full reverse, no clunking grinding ect...oil is crystal clear no shavings. The boat is out of the water. I've disconnected all shift cables and enaged the shift mechanism and still the same. It does move in forward slightly, but I can stop it with my hand. SOOOOOOO..... I have a spare outdrive in my shop with a busted steering fork. I begin by dropping the OIL before splitting the cases and "I SMELL GEAR OIL!" I've read articles in this forum that if the viscosity of the oil in the outdrive is incorrect this MAY cause my boat from moving forward. My penta manual states to use the same oil as the motor. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks for your time!
