I don't know why I did this, but while changing the gear oil in my Alpha 1 outdrive I loosened the water muffs. After I finished all the fluid changes I turned on the hose and started up the engine, 5.7L. Engine ran for maybe 3-4 minutes when I saw the temp getting higher then normal and remembered I had loosened the muffs. I jumped out of the boat and put the muffs back on, but by now the temp had gone to about 190. I let it run for a little while longer hoping that the temp would start to go down and it didn't, so I shut it down. I let things sit for about 45 minutes then started it up again but the water never started flowing through the transom. This is the third season on the water pump and I wasn't going to change it but now I don't think I have a choice. I've changed the pump one time before and it wasn't a big deal, just wondering if anyone has done this by leaving the upper attached and just splitting and dropping only the lower unit? It just seems like the job could be done with the upper unit in place. Is it stupid to try it like that?
