Re: I think my 75 70hp is ready for outboard heaven

a good probability is the exhust cover gaskets .On the port side of the engine, its a triangular cover with lots of bolts. The fact your compression is good leas me to that conclusion.Your compression indicates Heaven isnt in the cards yet.Just some minor Doctoring. So,pull the covers off. There are a couple in there/OMC has changed that design in the late 80's because of the problem u r having.it is possible the inner covers are corroded and passing.Take em off to see.Be careful with the bolts ,you may find some stuck. The best home remedy is get a tank of MAPP GAS not propane, yellow tank about 10 bucks AND a trigger igniter ,for quick relite if it goes out,on stuck bolts heat the crap out of the outer areas ,nt the bolt itself, use an on off ,on off, back and forth action ,dont just force a stuck bolt to back out ,the corrosion /salt etc binds it up,sometimes a little tapping with a plastic hammer on the head helps too.Let us know how it works out,the gaskets are a few bucks, its labor ,thats it
