I think my starter crapped out??

Ok, well i took my boat out last night with no problems at first. I got to the island that i was aiming for turned off the boat, went for a swim. When i was ready to leave i hit the ign. NO THING . I thought the battery was dead. I could hear the solenoid clicking so i know it's getting power. I hooked the spare battery up, and nothing. I got a tow home. Tried to jump it. I can hear the solenoid, and if i hold the key to start for a few seconds the starter wire gets hot. Is there a short in the starter somewhere? is this common when starters go bad?

Have you checked to see if your engine turns over. Put a wsrench on the crank and see if you can turn it. If you can, then you know your starter is shot. If you cannot, your problems are elsewhere.

Starter is bad. i took it off, and turned it over. about a cup of water poured out. NO GOOD! Does napa usually carry them?

They probably do, but you never mentioned what engine you have!

Just make sure it's a MARINE starter.

It's an 86 4.3 cobra. it's in a 17ft four winns. i called napa and they can get it. I just don't know which one i need. Does any one have the part number? Is it clockwise or counter?

I don't have a part number, but as stated earlier, make sure its a marine starter motor. Marine starters have additional shielding to prevent sparks from igniting any gas fumes/vapour in the engine bay!!

Believe it or not, NAPA has books to look up part numbers. Ask them or find someone at your NAPA that knows how to look them up.

yea, but they nor i know if my motor is LH or RH rotation. I think normal rotation is LH. They have the part numbers, but they have them for both LH and RH.

Great thanks! then it is left hand. I found one in orlando(40 miles) for $100.00 it's a reman, but it's better than paying the 225.00 or 380.00 that the stealer wanted.

Many auto electric shops will rebuild your old starter (or alternator) in as little as 1 day for less than $100. You might want to repair and keep the old one for a spare.
