I thought changing an impellar was suppose to be easy!

1981 15 horse evinrude.<br />took the six 3/8th head bolts out on the leg,unit dropped quarter inch.suppose to take the top nut 7/16th head off of the shift lever to drop the lower leg .the guide says to use a socket even though it has a slotted head for a screw driver as well.cant get my tiny 1/4 inch drive 7/16th socket in there.and yes i did shift my lever in to the forward posistion.can,t use a screw driver because its stuck on so tight and i,ve kinda sripped the inner slotted part trying.the book says the unit should drop 1/2 inch which would give me room to get my socket in there.but its only dropping 1/4 inch.any suggestions?

Possibly the shifter dog is not properly aligned with the gear. Turn the prop somewhat to make sure it is indeed in gear.<br /><br />Move the gear shift lever one way, then the other, to see if the unit might drop somewhat. A 1/4" drive socket should slide in there easily BUT that slotted hex head bolt is 3/8", not 7/16".

yes turning the prop did the trick. <br />now i,ve installed the new impellar but i can,t for the life of me figure out how to get the little pin lock key back in.when i took the plastic housing of that covers the impellar ,a little steel pin or key fell on the floor i picked it up but cant figure out how to put it back in.i think the impellar has a little groove on the inside where it slides down the drive shaft but i cant put the pin in the groove and still slide the impellar down the drive shaft.what am i doing wrong?

digger,<br />Try 'sticking' the pin to the flat side of the drive shaft with a bit of grease, slide the impeller down the drive shaft and align the impeller groove with the pin. When the pin is in place, the impeller will turn with the drive shaft. Then slide the impeller housing down the shaft. When the housing hits the impeller, turn the housing counter-clockwise. This will cause the 'arms' of the impeller to bend and enter the impeller cup. Use a small amount of dish washing liquid to lubricate the impeller vanes.

thanks xcusme.my motor is now back together and your advice sure was helpful.man i love this website.tommorow i will tackle rebuilding the carb.i,m gonna need all the help i can get.
