i too cannot find the serial number for my johnson! 15hp 80's??

posted a earlier thread about this 15hp i picked at a garage sale. dont have time today to play with some issues i am having. i bought this off a 70 yo man, who claims he took off the plate to bring it into the marine shop for some parts (dont ask why...) he lost the plate now i dont really know what year this is. runs ok, and i still need to do a compression check. the slow idle on the side of the motor is stripped (of course) but overall it looks to be in good condition. guy greased the heck out of the motor. he repaired the starter recoil, but i think something isnt right.
well does anyone know how to find the serial number? i have looked everywhere and cant seem to find anything.

numbers are 21 3 00

so, is this a good motor to invest a little time an money? or should i just tear her down and part out the motor?

Look on the power head for a core plug about the size of a quarter, there are numbers on them if it is still there.

do i need to pull the flywheel? and the starter? i cant see a plug anywhere...

No, if it were there you should be able to see it on the side of the block. I guess you can start looking through parts break downs and try to get an idea of the year by matching some parts, coils, power pack, recoil starter. I am sure some one will come along and help you by the pictures you have posted.

personal opinion on the motor? if compression is good, is it worth fixing??

The data plate on my old 9.9 johnson was actually a sticker, which became unstuck as I was cleaning the motor up to repaint it. I lost mine too, but as someone else said, maybe there are some numbers etched into the actual powerhead

I would think that if the spark and compression are good, it would be worth fixing up. That series of engine would usually give pretty good service with a little TLC.

Dino, this is where the welsh plug with the numbers you are looking for is located on my 84 9.9.
