How many of you that have gripes about the "current administration" have bothered to write your Congressman/Senator to tell them of your gripes. In general, I get the impression everyone likes to complain about the government(we all certainly hear alot of complaints about the Bush admin), but don't bother to actually complain to the people that can make a difference.

Also, can anyone clarify this for me...
I always thought that most of the stuff that happens inside of our borders, was controlled by the Congress(for the most part). I mean, they are responsible for how this country is running, no? Why does everything fall on Bush all the time? Am I way off base here?

Too bad you were not around a couple of weeks ago. You then could have answered my question regarding this same topic.

Good question Speedwagon. I suppose it makes sense... I too have always thouht that congress was intended to run the country.

I don't understand why we vote on so many propositions. We elect people to gov't who should do what we want (I'm stating idealisms here), yet we demand them to "take it to the people" with a proposition......?

Let our elected officials do their job and stop circumventing the system!

Bush was handed a pile o garbage. What a terrible time to be president! I don't think he's done too bad a job. He's not perfect, but he's tried and done allright. He receives constant blame because it's easy to point a finger and be an armchair president. The American people don't even agree what to do in Iraq... so it goes without saying that there will be pro- and anti- current administration.

One thing remains true.... the people elected him twice.

Re: I wanna know...

let's see, where to start?
Congress did not elect the president.
Congress is controlled by the same party as the president's and mostly running the same agenda.
Congress, when faced with doing their job about declaring war, copped out and gave their constitutional powers to the president.
When the president signs into law bills that congress has passed, he often makes a "signing statement" about how his administration will obey that law only if he wants to.

There's a few relevant facts. In fact, I have written my senators once in the past year or so, asking that they not go along with Rick Santorum's bid to do away wih the NOAA weather website. It seems that there was a private, subscription based weather website based in his state that didn't want the "competition" from the publicly paid for NOAA weather service. Now tell me that repubs don't do special interest favors, too? Anyway, one of my senators' staff wrote back promptly, and the other one I never heard a peep from. Both democrats.

Now, back in the Clinton days, when all we ever heard from the right was whining (and worse) about the president, did you write your congressman to complain? Was criticizing the president seen as shameful or an act of treason, like it is today?

Funny you should mention Treason and Clinton in the same paragraph.... 8)

So what became of the NOAA weather service?

I don't think that's right. It's the President's job to run the country, kinda like a General Manager. It's Congress's job to pass laws and appropiate money for him to do that job.

So far, it still works. I think that enough senators clearly saw what an awful, special interest based idea this was that they didn't go along.

I was astounded that anyone would even suggest getting rid of it. I work on the water and I look at that site EVERY day, and I use NOAA's tide calculator all the time too.

Rick's idea was that his friends would get the weather info from NOAA and then we the sheeple could subscribe to his friend's site to get the weather report. Yuk.

Guess they just didn't have enough money to funnel in to get the job done. Believe you me - that's all it would have taken.

Re: I wanna know...

Well, I've sent several notes to my senator Carl Levin supporting him on his stance re Iraq.

We're still making the same mistakes over and over in Iraq. I don't think it is Levin's fault. I am confident he's trying his best to represent me.

I even wrote a letter to Bart Stupak re hi levels of E-Coli in the St Mary's River System. There are lots of theories but no one has definitive proof what is causing them.

He had a meeting locally at Lake State University with State and Canadian officials, and promised to get to the bottom of it. We'll see, but he seems to be trying as well.

Re: I wanna know...

Actually, I have spoken and written to my congressman but written only to my Senators. No response from either of them. Maybe because I am bitterly opposed to the invasion and war in Iraq.

My congressman is a strong supporter of the military and his voting supports it. Of course we are in the district with Ft. Hood and VA Hospital. But he represents his constituents and will when as a Democrat in a largely Republican district (thanks to Tom DeLay former now shamed representative from Texas).

I still believe in America and I will not "Love it or leave it" as some have suggested because I know it to have been better and greater than it is today and plan to support it getting back to the PEOPLE.

well, I'd like to think that the will of the people might have had SOMETHING to do with it, but you are probably right. The senator that wrote back to me was already aware of the issue and showed a clear understanding of the problem. She's a democrat though and is high on the repubs hit list for this upcoming election. I hope we keep her.

Congress has one other big job as well, and that is oversight of the executive branch.

Certainly our current mess is not all Bush's fault. The RepublicanCongress has to take a significant part of the blame by ignoring their oversight responsibility in rubberstamping everything this administration has done.

I DO write with real paper and an envelope and a stamp.:^

I always get a response, and not a form letter. It's AMAZING!
