I have been looking for a weekender. I looked at several the last 3 weeks, started at 22' then seen i want 25 to 30'. The wife and I cant sail but we have friends and family that will try to teach us. What i've seen is that if I look at five 26'rs two have much more cabin room inside. What brands or models have the most space inside ? I have two small kids the oldest is three so some room will be nice. And are these boats beginner friendly?

hey if you don't want to sail and just want the camper room that a sailboat has. some people do convert sailboats into cruisers. take the mast off and all rigging and use only a motor.

Floating camper, thats an easy one. Take a look at designs by Phil Bolger (deceased recently) for a lot of camp cruisers, Both power and sail. There are "birdwatcher" designs all over, they provide safety for small children, shallow water sailing ability, and plenty of room. All plastic sheet sides make them almost unsinkable, since they can lay sideways without shipping a drop. Check out "Small Boats" annual, from Wooden Boat magazine . Each year they put out over 20 small boat sketch and build plans and great ideas for using the boats, with reviews from builders.

I built a garvey power boat with a removable cabin, and 50 hp OB, and used the "birdwatcher" walk through hatch ideas, to walk ashore dry footed. A good idea for most campers. These and other boats are available as plans, or also as finished new or used boats. The club I belong to is nationwide and can help, often with a courtesy cruise in your location. Try -- coots.org -- or contact me for more details and local to you clubs. Why tear up a good boat to get what you want, when with a bit of looking you will find one close to your ideal -- without losing any hope of reselling or trading if need be ?? Most "Coots" have several boats for different waters, and often build ones the later sell at good prices. We do boat shows, often we do get offers we can't refuse. I have usually four boats for different cruising grounds, and the wifes kayak !!

Happy Boat Hunting, Cal

There are so many variables it's hard to say what's best for someone else.
You didn't say if you would keep it in the water at a marina, or trailer it.
I chose a Macgregor 26 S because I also wanted something big enough to have my family on, be able to stay out several days if I want, and still be light enough to trailer behind my Ford Explorer. It only has a 6 cylinder motor.
The Mac has a water ballast instead of a lead ballast. that's 1200 lbs that I don't have to carry home with me! The boat is listed as being 1650 lbs dry, but rigged.
It has a sink, and a galley area. An enclosed head. a berth in the front that plenty big for 2 kids. The rear berth is about the size of a queen bed. It will run at hull speed on an 8 hp motor at about 2/3rds throttle and get 8-9 mpg if you need to motor for some reason.
The centerboard and the rudder swing up so you can float in about 1 1/2 ft of water.
I use a regular public boat ramp. No need for special extra deep water or a crane.IMG_1671.jpg

All depends on what water you want to sleep on... Freshwater lakes and rivers a houseboat on toons would likely work best. If you're set on saltwater living then definitely a decent sailboat moored somewhere nice. Just get the best bang for your budget whichever way you want to go. Plus poke around the sailing forum here to see what tempts your checkbook.

A day or two behind this post, but having taking up sailing in the last few years there are two things to consider already mentioned. Are you going to keep it in a slip or trailer sail. Here where I live (close to St Louis) a slip can run 2400 a year which is cheap compared to most places. I would go with something with a swing keel that you can trailer so you can pull it when not using it. Keep in mind though a trailer sailor will have to be rigged every time. My wife and I if we are pressed can rig our small 17 footer in 30 minutes or just under. I can step the mast without a gin pole. A friend of mine's 26' Hunter it takes two of us and a gin pole to rig it and it takes us 1.5 hrs.

We've evolved from living aboard a sailboat (3 years) to a trawler, then a couple of small cuddy cabins to the current trailerable houseboat.

Re: I want a floating camper ?

I have a line on a 27' freebee. My parents seen it a couple yrs ago and said it was really nice back then. It needs to have the bottom work done. So waiting on info about the boat. If its in ok shape i'll build a trailer and haul it home 200 miles for scraping and painting. Then another 50 miles to the lake. Or it might be a floating pile of garbage when i see it.

Re: I want a floating camper ?

So the freebee was a older American Mariner 8.0 (26'.9")!! Ready to sail with a 4stroke outboard like new! I love it ! Its cool. Today i bought a 24' grady white just for the trailer, its rough. I just need to learn to sail now!! Luck that i have so many friends that do. Hay i got a free grady white in my drive way if anyone wants it? I sold the 235hp that was on the back to my neighbor today. So tomorrow i start my sail boat trailer, next weekend I pick up the American.

You'd be far better off investing in learning to sail first. That way you will a) see if you like it, b) learn how to do it safely instead of by dangerous trial and error, and c) get some idea of what kind of boat you want to sail and avoid an expensive mistake.

In answer to your question Aquarius 23's have alot of cabin space for the size. I have one and sleep my family on it (theres 5 of us) granted that is the max possible. They're trailer sailers and are easy to trailer and rig (realative to their size) built extremely solid and you will probably be able to find one in good condition fairly cheap. This boat is a fair sailer but you wont be winning any races. There is also a yahoo group dedicated to these boats where you can get more info than you will ever need. I have actually described mine many times as a "floating camper" good luck

Re: I want a floating camper ?

Thanks everyone. I got the American Mariner 27' home last wednesday! Man thats a lot of boat. Top speed of 54mph on hwy, 200 miles from home not fun. Trailer worked great, fit great but i was a lil heavy on rear axle(thus 54mph). I have been cleaning and cleaning. I'll get picks up soon. OOOO had 3 inches of oysters on hull they came off easy with 4 guys and some plastic kayak paddles when we got it home. Not many American Mariners around i see, let me know if you have one or have sailed on one.
