Actually the Manta Ray was the better-thought-out of the flying tubes. They seem to stay relatively stable and were more easily controlled than the Kite Tube. They routinely sell on eBay for $4-500, which is amazing considering thats what they sold new for! If I had $400 to burn on boating toys, I'd get one. The injuries, to my understanding, were all from using the Kite Tube made by Wego, as well as from people towing the tubes way too fast.

Any idea how fast the boat has to go to get this thing in the air? I know it will vary by the size of the rider. In the shots at the end of the video it looks like the boat is moving very fast.

Check your local regs. The manta was outlawed all up/down Colorado river and the life guards will give you a ticket here in San Diego the second they see it come up off the water. They are sure a lot of fun and I wish the government would not infringe on our right to make choices that don't endanger others around us. Sorry to hear about your neck Sbooy4 but you knew the danger before getting on it.

Guess I should have mentioned that I had one but ended selling it since I could not use it as intended. If I recall the thing would lift up at 25 going into wind with aprx 125# rider. Once in air you would need to throttle down or the boat would accelerate and the tube would shot up, these things did generate lot of drag before bouncing into air.

Actually I wasn't aware of any danger beyond whats typical of water sports.. They were new and still legal and my injury wasn't serious just a sore neck for a week. Wasn't until we started hearing of people break necks and them being outlawed that I considered my self lucky

i saw a small rigid hulled zodiac, that was drastically overpowered........and out in 4 ft waves, it behaved quite similiar to that death trap!!! lol

Sbooy42 please don't think I was picking at you and I'm glad your injury was not serious. I just don't like when anyone else infringes on my ability to make decisions under the umbrella of protecting me from myself. I still think the tube was great fun and relatively safe when not abused.

We can kind of do that with my connelly skull tube. It starts to life with just 2 riders. With one adult you can stand on the back with our hands on the handles and rock it back, and it will get about 2-3 feet in the air before coming back down.

I don't think I would want to be as high as that thing gets, though, unless there was absolutely no wind.

I wonder how many stunt doubles died in the making of that film? That does look like a blast though. I wonder where you get your certification to be a "trained professional" rider so you can really take off?
