Ok I have been looking around the net for some info on Marine stereos but I cant seem to find any really great info on them. I was wondering what you guys would recommend I should look at. I plan on doing this system just like a high performance car system. I want the works. Power power and more power! I plan on adding a wakeboard tower over the winter and there will be tower speakers up there, but Im more looking at a pwerful headunit. Can I use a car head unit or should I stick with a Marine unit?<br /><br />The boat is a 1981 Formula that has finally started running great after 5 years. (Knock on wood) So I want for lack of a better word, **** it out a bit and make it a sweet ride. Any suggestions on what components I should look at? Corrosion is going to be less of a probelm because even though its an ocean going boat, I pan on making the whole system removable for extended storage and saftey.

Re: I want to build a sweet stereo setup...

I just installed a Pioneer Premier car stereo in my boat and it worked fine over the weekend. It's location is well protected from water and I also installed the Pioneer marine cover. I new to boating so I don't know if there issues other than the stereo taking a direct hit of the H2O.<br /><br />Al

Re: I want to build a sweet stereo setup...

First of all, whoever came up with the idea of mounting speakers on a wakeboard tower...should be shot. In many situations, people who are 150 feet away from you do not want to hear your stereo. If you end up with flare guns, fired across your bow, garbage and or beer cans thrown at you, or your skier being cut-off...perhapps you should think twice about this. With all of that said, if you want a serious stereo, it requires POWER, from your amps and from your power source (batteries). Forget about finding a powerful head unit...might possibly work in a car, will not come anywhere close to working in a boat! You need one or more very powerful amplifiers to get the job done. It is not uncommon to have an amp that will produce over 100 watts per channel for each speaker at 8 or four ohms to get some real spl (sound pressure level). That is for mid/high frequencies, for bass, such as with a 10 or 12 inch subwoofer, you will need 200-400 watts per speaker to "feel" this. Lets say a 50 watt x 4 Head unit(for the boat), and eq's/crossovers and lets say a 4 channal amp for the mid /highs at 100 watts each at 4 ohms, that would be about 33 amps of power consumption at 12 volts. Lets add two 12 inch subwoofers at 200 watts each...that's another 33 amps. So, with everything, lets just round up...your sound system needs about 85 amps for full output. So, we can figure a seperate battery for the sound system, and you had better have a good alternator to keep it charged (not from an outboard). A re-cap of this would be a head unit that has four outputs of about 50 watts each, to feed four 6 1/2 two ways in the boat, then a four channel amp to feed four 6 1/2" or 8 inch two ways for the wake tower and a seperate amp of 200 watts each for two 12 inch subwoofers ( if you like dance or rap music)...double the subwoofer power.

I think a gazillion watt stereo on a boat is tantamount to planting your mega-stereo in the backyard of a subdivision on sunday afternoon. EVERYBODY doesn't want to hear your music preferences.

I love a good system probably even more than the next guy, but keep it in the house!!!!! I hate the a-holes who drive around residential areas with their gazillion watt bass-mobiles. In a boat is a million times worse. Sound carries a long way on the water, and those who have the mega watt boat stereos and play them loudly are just plain disrespectful.<br /><br />I've had the mega car stereo thing. 1000 watts of .02% THD. There's no way I'll help somebody do it in a boat.

I've got an idea where you get all the sound you want without spending lots of dollars on equipment. $200 gets you a real nice set of headphones.

Oh, great idea! Why not mount underwater speakers too. Then you can not only annoy everyone on the lake, but you can kill the fish, too.<br /><br />Sorry, but your particular taste in music is probably not the same as mine. I go to the lake to fish and contemplate my navel. If you blast by me with your music blaring, you may find my reaction not to your liking.<br /><br />Try a little consideration for others, OK?

Isn't it interesting how people will spends big bucks building what they consider a "sweet" audio system when all they play is "orchestrated noise" in the 200 Hz range -- more commonly known as "music without notes". Since most young people today are nearly deaf from the noise at clubs they frequent, cars or trucks they drive with ungodly loud mufflers, or Harleys that are in my view the most obnoxious noise makers of all time, it makes one ponder their logic when considering installation of any "high performance" music system. They certainly have no regard for the people around them that have to listen to that -- well -- noise.

Hey guys,<br />He asked about a stereo system for his boat not your opinion on noise polution.<br />I might not like loud music on the lake, but thats not what he asked.<br />Some guy running open headers on a jet boat is just as bad.<br /><br />B-Diddy,<br />I would go with a High end pioneer head unit with built in crossover.<br /><br />You will need 2 10" subs with a 1000 watt Single channel sub amp. Look at memphis for the amp and polk audio for the subs.<br /><br />I would go with four 6.5" 2-way speakers driven by a 4 channel amp 500-1000 watts. I would go with polk and memphis again.<br /><br />Set your High pass filter on 125hz for the 6.5's and your low pass filter on 125hz also.<br />This will channel bass to the subs and mid/high to the 6.5's.<br />You will need to run a seperate battery for your system. It is also a good idea to use 1 farad stiffening caps on the amps.<br /><br />With this system you can **** alot of people off or listen a reasonable levels. Your choice.<br />Good luck!!!

Re: I want to build a sweet stereo setup...

i like bluewater's recommendations<br /><br />i wouldn't bother with marine audio equipment. i've had car audio in my boat for almost 5 years and i'll be changing speakers for the first time in a few weeks. that's wakeboarding and wet dogs too.<br /><br />go with polypropolene speakers, no paper cones. a good amp and head unit should start you off. you won't need to bother with the extra battery until you start running subs too or if you want to play the tunes without running the engine for very long.<br /><br />as for all the old guys whining about the noise...turn your hearing aids down! nobody is telling you what to do with your stinky 2 strokes....toss'n bottles, flare guns, cutting skiers off....grow up

Re: I want to build a sweet stereo setup...

Stick with marine equipment...the constant dampness will take its toll on auto equipment rather quickly. I installed an auto unit last year (only because I removed it before trading in vehiche) and even removed it each time I moored the boat after a weekend. The system lasted a year and is beginning to fail. The connections to the face plate are beginning to corrode, disabling the digital display...and I can only imagine what's going on inside. If you're paying for one - GO MARINE. Same for speakers, etc.

"as for all the old guys whining about the noise...turn your hearing aids down! nobody is telling you what to do with your stinky 2 strokes....toss'n bottles, flare guns, cutting skiers off....grow up"<br />-----------------------------------<br /><br />Well, now. I don't wear a hearing aid. I hear just fine, thanks. As for being old, well that comes to us all. If you're lucky, you'll live to be old, yourself.<br /><br />A couple of weekends ago, I had the displeasure of anchoring and fishing along a nice weedline. About ten minutes after I dropped anchor, a pontoon boat pulled up and anchored about 25 feet from me. They had a "nice sound system" cranked up a "nice" case of beer in the cooler, and a "nice" bunch of spinnerbaits they were flinging everywhere, including right across my line.<br /><br />Guess what? Most of them were older than me. What did I do? I pulled up my anchor and found another fishing spot.<br /><br />Does that make their discourteous behavior any more acceptable? I don't think so.<br /><br />Anytime you crank up your sound system to high decibel levels, you're going to tick off people around you. It's guaranteed, as long as there are other people nearby. <br /><br />Me? I don't throw things. I just move on. It's too bad, though, that I had to leave the spot I wanted to fish, I think.<br /><br />It's an open forum, so comments regarding loud sound systems on the water are OK.

Re: I want to build a sweet stereo setup...

A company called Fusion make an awesome 50W RMS x 4 marine head unit plus marine power amplifiers. I've only got the head unit plus 4 5.25" speakers in my cuddy, however I can attest to the quality and waterproofing of the head unit which was AUS$380. http://www.fusioncaraudio.com/ <br /><br />For CAT, I was recently on a public mooring in my favourite fishing area on Botany Bay (Sydney Australia) and a HUGE 50+ft Riviera gin palace rocked up besides me and asked to either leave or let him raft up to my little 16ft cuddy. I chose to leave and motored gently to a spot about 200 yards upwind. I threw out a line with my favourite lure, the stereo on at lowish level, enjoying listening to Eric Clapton's Unplugged CD when "zap" off went the line for about 50ft across the stern. I pulled back to hook whatever it was properly and reeled in my best ever Flathead - about 6lbs of delicious fish! Sometimes life rewards those who are tolerant. :)

Re: I want to build a sweet stereo setup...

I bit again, this thread is invoked to create contoversy. Tvit100 had the right idea. if you want to hear music while out on the water, get a GOOD player with some GOOD headphones. sound travels easily across water. Not all of us want to hear YOUR sound.. PLUS boats in general, are noisy, loud machines and can create enough noise by themselves without adding 4 or 5 hundred watts..your music will sound a lot better to YOU if you use headphones.. that way you don't hear your engine when it starts knocking and banging..And I love loud music as long as it dosen't offend YOU....... :)

Re: I want to build a sweet stereo setup...

Loud stereos and loud boats in close quarters are inconsiderate. But so are a lot of other things that some people never think about. I was 8 miles offshore on a fishing reef. No one else in site. The stereo level was reasonable. Sure enough, some out-of-towners decided to anchor within 100 feet of us and run there loud dirty mouths. That was time to turn up the 1000 watt amp and a little "rap" music. (I hate that stuff). Guess they did too, they soon moved away and our radio was turned down and Jimmy Buffet started playing again. <br />BDiddy, marine Pioneer speakers, 2- 8" and <br />2- 6.5", sound great and last many years. I have the polyplanar stereo, it seems overpriced, but it may be worth the money if it lasts, and it has been wet a few times while washing the boat. The main thing to plan for is a marine amp and a neat, safe, proper wiring job since you are talking about decent current draw and no need for problems while enoying the "system". On a boat, the placement of the speakers are very important for quality sound.
