Re: I want to take a shotgun to my outboard

I don't recommend hitting in the prop shaft area. I pounded downward on the round tubular area that houses the gears, if you know what I mean. I know it's not a horizontal surface, but there is enough lip there for the hammer to get good bite.

Re: I want to take a shotgun to my outboard

I must support M90HP with regard to the manuals.
I have a Clymer and an early '80's 50 Merc. I have read the L/U section repeatededly and there seemms to be no mention of removing any linkage.
However, there is what looks like an adjustable rod at the front (Boat side) of the L/U.
I think, once you have got it off, the manual can be used as a step by step sequence reminder of the steps. But for a first time attempt, I reckon they are pretty lame. :p
NB Oil comimg from L/U may only be unburnt fuel/oil. If it smells like SAE90 it's gear oil from L/U if it smells like fuel it's only unburnt fuel from short operation time.
Didn't end up seeing those coloured bands..
Try to persevere with the L/U as it will give you a wealth of experience with that motor :D
Suppose that's fine coming a person from a land that is experiencing winter and no real need to go boating....

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
YIPYIPYIPYIPYIPYIP YEEEHAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Wacked the top of the cav plate and the stud on the front a bit (using a hammer on a piece of 2X4)... crack got bigger.... wedged a prybar in there, opened up a little more! I had to get my wife out there to lift the motor while I held the lower so I could clear the driveshaft out of the bottom. The only thing that hung up was the black rubber hose, I think it's the speedo hose. This line is really odd, looks like rubber line but you can't squeeze it, it's hard like plastic line... I wonder if it dry rotted or something. Anyway now I can tackle the water pump tomorrow. I'm wondering if I should just replace the whole pump while the lower unit is off.
The lower unit is hard to handle... I am going to build a wooden bracket to hold it upright while I work on it (I had the prop on it and left the gear oil in it so it's a bit unwieldy...)

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO PUT IN THEIR 2 CENTS AND GAVE TIPS, HINTS, AND ENCOURAGEMENT!

By the way, this thing looks great inside, looks like the previous owner kept real good care of it. All the nuts/bolts had antiseize, the shafts had lubrication on the splines, everything looked nice and new in there.

By the way, what kind of grease should I (relubricate) the shaft ends with (shift shaft and drive shaft)?? I have some waterproof bearning grease "for boat trailer bearings". Is that good?

THANKS!!

Bravo...
Ya gotta hand it to the iboaters though..
Without them the L/U would have 2 large holes in it.. :D :D
Did you find out whether there were and linkages to disconnect ???

Re: I want to take a shotgun to my outboard

Good job Merc90
Use Quick sliver brand propshaft greese/anticorrosion greese for assembly. Re-greese the prop also. Change the gear oil. Now comes the fun part. Getting this rascal back together and having it shift properly. Most guy's, myself included tend to mess this up. Now lock up your gun and your beer. Be nice to the wife you may need her to help. Learn to say darn it. These L/Us default to forward gear. So make sure the shift lever is in forward and the l/u is in forward. Take your time, study how this stuff works. Lube your water pipe and exhaust rubber seal and grommet with a little vasoline. A flash lite may come in handy. Carefully make sure things are lined up and slide that puppy home. If you start to get frustrared, stop and go watch TV. Finish it tomorrow night. Once you do this job a couple times it gets easier. Every once in a while I still say a few choice words while doing this. Let us know how you make out.

I actually think my Mercs come apart and go back together easier if I talk to them using a colorful vocabulary. I generally do it when the munchkin has gone to bed or is away at the grandparents'... Congrats on getting it apart! Sometimes some gentle persuasion is all it needs...
- Scott

Re: I want to take a shotgun to my outboard

Unicorn: You are totally right, it almost got turned into aluminum dust. There were no linkages at all, aside from the nuts and bolts there was just one skinny black rubber hose to pop off but that was obvious since it was outside the housing. I guess just friction was holding it up!

Alcan:I'll head to the Marina and get the Quicksilver lube for the driveshaft and propshaft. Sounds like you've done this before :) It's easy to make sure that the shifter on the boat is in forward, but which way do I turn the piece in the lower unit that the splined shift shaft fits in to in order to make sure it is in forward too? Thanks for the advice, I'm taking it all to heart.

Chinewalker: I'd suggest you write a how-to manual on your method but I doubt they could publish the words! :D

Re: I want to take a shotgun to my outboard

Sorry for the multiple entries. I kept getting an error message saying it didn't got through. BTW - I knew it would take some "massaged" pounding to get it to release...

Re: I want to take a shotgun to my outboard

As these L/us default to forward, they are spring loaded so you almost have to hold them in any other position but forward. How ever they will cam over and hold in the wrong place. When installing the empeller turn the driveshaft the same way the engine rotates, make sure your prop is rotating forward also. With marine engines it is possible and common to have counter rotating engines and props, but in your case I think clockwise should be correct.

Wow! this is like reading a good mystery novel. Can't put it down. Sounds like there won't be a murder though. This is an excellent example of folks taking the time and effort to help someone with a solvable problem. I've been helped before and know what a great feeling it is to be on the receiving end of the advice. I try to read the boards regularly and it is great for preventive purposes. Great job to all.
